Old Coatbridge Villages

Most of the villages in the vicinity of Coatbridge grew up during the industrial boom of the nineteenth century, when coal, ironstone and fireclay began to be mined on a large scale and a comprehensive transport network developed. Annathill's miners' rows have long gone, but it is shown in the book as a self-sufficient village with all manner of amenities. Coatdyke was once separate from Coatbridge and had its own identity and landmarks such as the Stewart Institute. Many of Glenboig's buildings were victims of the village's industrial success - mining of fireclay left a legacy of subsidence and demolition. Evocative photos of Bargeddie, Gartcosh, Mollinsburn and Condorrat are all included too, along with a view of the Gartloch Distillery at Chryston and a billhead from one of the fireclay works at Garnkirk.
