Artikelname: Early Railways of West Fife
Artikelbeschreibung:
The culmination of many years of research, including privileged access to private records, in public archives and following intensive fieldwork, this definitive volume gives authoritative histories of the early railways of West Fife. Until now these have generally been poorly documented (sometimes ignored) and if mentioned at all often repeat erroneous statements from earlier works. Remarkable discoveries have been made; including for example details of hitherto unrecorded early track and rail designs, and the authenticated arrival in Fife of Scotland’s first steam railway locomotive (thus solving a long standing mystery). To complement the story, other topics cover the history of the Charlestown branch to closure, Lord Elgin’s 10¼ inch gauge garden railway at Broomhall, and the narrow (and standard) gauge railways of the Crombie RN Depot etc.

Surprisingly the village has an industrial past, with coal shipped from its harbour until 1871 when rail transport took over. It was also once popular as a destination for Sunday visitors from Edinburgh, who in the early days arrived on pleasure steamers to enjoy alcoholic drinks on the Sabbath, the journey qualifying them as 'bona fide travellers'. Both of Aberdour's well-known beaches - the Black and White Sands - are illustrated along with countless views of historic village locations including the golf course, castle, church and public park. Other landmarks featured include the exotic interior of Kinnaird's Tea Gardens, the Hawkcraig quarries, HMS Tarlair (a naval station formerly located at Hawkcraig), the island of Inchcolm and Otterston Loch.

Artikelname: Old Elie and Earlsferry
Artikelbeschreibung: Eric Eunson charts the history of attractive Elie, covering its development from a ferry, whaling and coastal trading port through to its rise and gradual fall as a seaside resort. There's an unhurried feel to the atmosphere of these photos, which show quiet streets with people going about their business at a leisurely pace.
Artikelname: Old Kelty
Artikelbeschreibung: Kelty is a mining community through and through and flourished from the 1870s onwards when large-scale coal-winning was begun by the Fife Coal Company. Buildings such as the village's various 'Gothenburgs' (licensed premises run on a charitable basis), the Aitken Baths and Moray Institute testify to a time when industry was king and the coal companies had a hand in most aspects of people's lives. Nearby hamlets and villages such as Cantsdam and Oakfield originally grew up alongside the local road and tram networks (the Great North Road ran through Cantsdam), but benefited from industrial growth in the area, which in turn was boosted by the development of an extensive railway network. Photographs of the Lindsay and Aitken Collieries and Blairenbathie Mine illustrate the scale of mining around Kelty, while even the famous Adam dynasty of architects, whose estate of Blairadam was nearby, exploited coal reserves on their land. Nowadays deep mining has vanished and modern Kelty has been reborn as a commuter village adjacent to the M90 motorway. This collection of photographs shows the village and its neighbours (including Maryburgh and Keltybridge) in their industrial heyday, but also harks back to an era of rural peace and quiet.
Artikelname: Old Kilconquhar and Colinsburgh
Artikelbeschreibung: These two villages lie within the historic Parish of Kilconquhar, which has been an important religious centre since at least the twelfth century. While the village of Kilconquhar grew up around its church, Colinsburgh is said to have been founded by Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres, to house his disbanded Jacobite troops. It showed signs of becoming an important commercial centre at an early stage in its history, and both villages benefited from the development of the railway network in the late 1850s, when both were served by stations. Pictures included show curling on Kilconquhar Loch, views of both villages' main streets, Kilconquhar House, Charleton House, Balcarres House and its South Lodge, cottages at Balneil and the remains of Auld Robin Gray's cottage.

Artikelname: Old Newport & Wormit
Artikelbeschreibung: The Tay Road Bridge, opened in 1966, saw the end of Newport as the ferry port gateway to the Kingdom of Fife, and afterwards both it and Wormit rapidly became part of Dundee's suburbia. Mairi Shiels' book depicts the days when Newport and Wormit bustled with travellers and were relatively busy places. Among the more unusual pictures are some of the training ship Mars, which was once moored off Woodhaven Pier, as well as a view of camels and elephants forming an orderly queue at the Newport Slip when the circus travelled through town.

The remainder of the book covers the town, with Eric Eunson's text up to his usual high standard making this an informative and readable story.
Artikelname: Old St Andrews
Artikelbeschreibung: The St Andrews Preservation Trust gave us access to their fantastic archives for this book, and the pictures are accompanied by Helen Cook's excellent narrative. Although to the outsider St Andrews may appear to have changed little, these photographs reveal that this is not the case. Past events such as car and motorcycle racing on the West Sands, and a poignant picture of evacuee children arriving at the station are just a couple of the subjects featured. There's extensive coverage of the Fishergate and those that lived there, as well as life around the harbour and the old Step Rock bathing pool. This is a really attractive book featuring a very wide range of photographs.
Artikelname: Old St Monans
Artikelbeschreibung: St Monans (also sometimes spelt St Monance), fishing port par excellence, is pictured here in its heyday before the fishing industry collapsed and, as befits the importance of this industry to the town it dominates the book. The mines featured in the book are Cardowan, Seafield, and the ill-fated Rothes.
Artikelname: Wheels Around Dunfermline and West Fife
Artikelbeschreibung: West Fife is home to one of the world's most famous transport landmarks, the Forth Rail Bridge, and has a varied transport history that once included wooden waggonways, a tram network radiating from Dunfermline, plus a stretch of the Great North Road. Industry played an important role and West Fife's pits were served by an extensive railway network, with several locos and other rolling stock pictured. Agriculture was important too, as illustrated by the impressive yet archaic threshing mill shown on the front cover. In addition to Dunfermline, places illustrated include Inverkeithing, Burntisland, Charlestown, Cowdenbeath, Rosyth, Saline, Bowhill Colliery, Valleyfield Colliery, Blairhall Colliery, St David's, Limekilns, Glencraig and North Queensferry.
