Old Tollcross, Morningside and Swanston

Well-known Edinburgh author Malcolm Cant has written an authoritative and interesting history to accompany this collection of pictures. The populous districts of Tollcross, Bruntsfield and Morningside are illustrated in the days when the cable tramway still operated, with more recent photographs showing their successors, the electric trams, shortly before their removal in the 1950s. Important former landmarks such as Gillespie's Hospital and Falcon Hall illustrate the districts before they became tenement suburbs, while images of Blackford Hill, the Braid Hills Hotel and rural Swanston (where Robert Louis Stevenson spent childhood summers) complete the book.
