The Central Stewartry

The Central Stewartry covers Borgue, Twynholm and Gatehouse of Fleet, along with some of the smaller settlements in this lush and attractive corner of what was once part of Kirkcudbrightshire. Belted Galloway cattle, the smuggler Dirk Hatteraick's cave, the Fleet Canal, Gatehouse station (long-closed and famous for its remoteness from the town it served) and the architectural flights of fancy dreamt up by Victorian industrialist James Brown in and around Kirkandrews are some of the sights on offer.
