Old Fairlie

For what appears to be a quiet seaside town, Fairlie has a surprising amount of history and industry associated with it. Yacht-building, quarrying, a busy steamer pier and two railway stations were some of the features that led to its prosperity. In the nineteenth century wealthy Glaswegians started building houses in Fairlie, and it also became a popular escape from the city for less affluent holidaymakers, who hired rowing boats, played tennis, went putting, or just enjoyed the beach.
