Clyde Coast Picture Palaces

Cinema architecture has traditionally ranged from the grandiose to the distinctly basic, and the cinemas along the Clyde and Ayrshire coasts represented these extremes and everything in between. Flights of fantasy such as the Viking in Largs (illustrated on the front cover) contrast with the likes of the Picture Palace in Helensburgh, which was little more than a corrugated shack - and certainly not a palace. Elsewhere, interior shots of modish foyers show Art Deco detailing and modernist furniture, while outside posters advertise long-forgotten celluloid classics such as Attack of the Crab Monsters. Towns included in Bruce Peter's (admittedly rather liberal) definition of 'Clyde Coast' are: Clydebank, Renfrew, Dumbarton, Helensburgh, Port Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock, Dunoon, Rothesay, Millport, Largs, Saltcoats, Ardrossan, Stevenston, Troon, Irvine, Prestwick, Ayr ... and Campbeltown.
