Artikelname: Photographic Guide to Sea and Shore Life of Britain and North-west Europe
Artikelbeschreibung: This photographic guide to sea shore animals and plants represents a completely new approach to field guides. It is aimed at those who wish to find and identify organisms encountered on the sea shore or immediately offshore quickly and easily while promoting their conservation.

Uniquely, each species is illustrated by a photograph and, in most cases, accompanied by a line drawing that emphasises the critical features for identification and a map to show the distribution of the species in North-West Europe. The text itself deliberately focuses on features that complement the photographs and facilitate identification non-destructively - where, for example, burrowing worms can only be identified by digging them up and therefore killing them, only the cast, the part usually seen, is shown. Stress is laid on the importance of exploiting all available information for locating and identifying each species - if two species have identical appearance they are described separately and behavioural, geographical, or seasonal features that distinguish them are described in the text.

There is no other guide to sea shore organisms like this one; those available are either less comprehensive or less well illustrated. It will appeal to beachcombers of all levels, from families to students and professionals, as well to divers and those visiting the proliferating numbers of commercially run marine aquaria that are open to the public.

Artikelname: Prime Butterflies Areas in Bulgaria
Artikelbeschreibung: Studies of butterflies in Bulgaria have been carried out for more than 150 years. While the species distribution was more or less known, their conservation was not a special priority until recently. Previously the conservation efforts were mainly focused on a particular species (the decline of butterflies has been recognized for many years) and not on the areas which they inhabit. The main object here was to identify and describe the most important sites for butterflies in the country, implementing a simple method using target species, in order to help the definition of the Bulgarian part of the European Union's NATURA 2000 Network. Fifty NATURA 2000 sites are properly listed and described, and in this respect the book can serve as NATURA 2000 Guide for Bulgaria. The book is richly illustrated by color photos of species and habitats, maps, it includes species listings and data on conservation and protection, as well as basic GIS data on a CD. It is adressed to lepidopterologists, biogeographers, conservationists, NATURA 2000 workers and anyone interested in the nature of the Balkans.

    Artikelname: Pythons of Australia
Artikelbeschreibung: This book is a very comprehensive study of the pythons of Australia. It is divided into the following chapters: History, Anatomy and Physiology, Behaviour, Reproduction and Life history, Food and Feeding, Conservation and Management, and Captive Care. The book also contains sections on species accounts and a two-page suggested reading list. I found this book very easy to read and very informative. Despite the fact that the species information is limited to Australia, the general information on pythons is very useful. ... There is a discussion on taxonomy noting current terminology for some of the python species whose generic name has been recently changed i.e., Chondropython to Morelia. ... The behaviour chapter is quite interesting and covers such topics as activity patterns, courtship and mating, and combat. It continues by discussing home ranges, locomotion and thermoregulation. Throughout the book, numerous studies have been cited to lend credence to the information, and in this chapter, the tracking studies are quite informative. ... The Reproduction and Life History chapter contains valuable information such as gestation and incubation times, egg laying behavior and average clutch sizes ... Reproductive success, color change, sexual dimorphism and sex ratios are also covered. ... The center of the book contains 34 color plates that are of high quality and depict different pythons for identification, feeding activity and hatching. ... This book would be an asset to anyone that has an interest in snakes especially if they have a specific interest in pythons.

    Artikelname: Scorpions of Southern Africa
Artikelbeschreibung: Although Southern Africa is one of the best places on earth to see and study scorpions, little information is generally available on these misunderstood and often persecuted creatures. "Scorpions of Southern Africa" is both a field guide to the identification of the more common and visible of Southern Africa's rich fauna of 130 scorpion species and a description of the physiology and ecology of scorpions. It dispels myths that portray scorpions as deadly venomous animals to be killed on sight, and offers an intriguing insight into the amazing adaptations that have enabled scorpions to survive over millions of years. Layman's terms are used as far as possible, and a glossary of more complicated terminology is provided. Distribution maps and photographs are given for over 50 Southern African species as well as practical information about where to look for scorpions and how best to handle these often feared creatures.

Artikelname: The Biology of Rocky Shores
Artikelbeschreibung: This is an introduction to the study of marine rocky shores in the temperate zone. It is designed to encourage students and others to couple enormous intellectual rewards with the pleasure of working in some of the last easily accessible but relatively unspoilt places, and can be used as a basis for field courses, project work, or for lectures. Centred in North-West Europe, but using examples from all over the world, the book begins by considering the physical factors that characterize the habitat - primarily tides and waves - and goes on to assess how they influence the organisms that live within it. It describes how the behaviour and physiology of individuals belonging to the major groups - algae, grazers, suspension feeders, and predators - are affected by their habitat, how their communities are structured, and discusses theories of community organization. For field courses, it suggests experiments and observations that can be carried out on the shore or in nearby laboratories. Finally, problems of pollution and conservation are considered in the context of their effects upon biodiversity.

Artikelname: The Biology of Soft Shores and Estuaries
Artikelbeschreibung: There is no up-to-date book on estuarine biology, and nothing at all that deals with marine soft shores as well as estuarine ones. This latest addition to the Biology of Habitats series corrects this omission and will complement The biology of rocky shores, by the same author. This book focuses on marine and estuarine soft sediments as complex and essential habitats for an astonishing variety of animals and plants whose lifestyles are intimately bound up with sediment structure. It discusses sediments as habitats first, then takes in turn the ecosystems found on sandy shores, mudflats and seagrass beds, salt marshes and mangrove swamps, and life below the tidemarks. Adaptations of the organisms are fully described, and each chapter ends with a section on techniques. Later chapters discuss estuarine and lagoonal habitats, both of which contain primarily soft sediments, but add further complicating characteristics to those found in the sea. A discussion of estuarine food webs emphasizes the ways in which organisms interact. The book ends with a discussion of the ways in which marine and estuarine soft sediments have been abused by man, and some of the opportunities that have been taken to counteract these abuses.

Artikelname: The Nature of Mediterranean Europe - An Ecological History
Artikelbeschreibung: Drawing on their own fieldwork as well as on historical records, archaeology, pollen analysis and previous research (the authors) trace the evolution of climate, vegetation and landscape in southern Europe from prehistoric times to the present". Looks at the artistic and scientific interpretation of the area as a "Lost Eden", and points out the current threats to Mediterranean landscapes.

Artikelname: The Newts and Salamanders of Europe
Artikelbeschreibung: Nearly thirty years after the publication of the last detailed book on the newts and salamanders of Europe, this book at last provides a much needed, modern coverage of the ecology, behavior, evolution, and conservation of these fascinating amphibians. The author abandons the popular conception of amphibians as a primitive group poorly adapted to life on land. Indeed, he shows how the diversity of newt and salamanders life-styles underlines how this relatively small group of animals have survived in such diverse habitats as underground caves, mountain tops, tropical forests, and the Siberian tundra. Delightfully illustrated and fully referenced throughout, the book synthesizes much recent research into a lively and readable format that will be of interest to both experienced and inexperienced herpetologists and natural historians. Given recent concern over global amphibian declines, newts and salamanders have been the focus of considerable media attention and scientific work in recent years. This book describes how an understanding of the ecology and habitat requirements of these animals can lead to more effective conservation measures.
