Artikelname: A Dictionary of Entomology
Artikelbeschreibung: Entomology is a huge, wide ranging subject with many facets, and interfaces with many other sciences. Consequently its terms, phrases and names are large in number and disparate in origin. This book is a comprehensive, fully cross-referenced collection of approximately 35,000 terms, names and phrases used in entomology. It covers insect anatomy, behaviour, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy, and systematics. The origin, etymology, part of speech, plural forms and definition of each term and phrase are all provided, including the language, meaning or root of each term and constituent parts. Where meanings have changed, or terms have been borrowed from other disciplines, the most current usage is indicated. The common names of insects, their scientific binomen and taxonomic classification are provided, with diagnoses of pest species in many cases. All insect order, suborder, superfamily, family and subfamily names are given, together with the diagnostic features of orders and families. Names of deceased entomologists, or scientists from other fields who have contributed to entomology are included, with the citation for their biography or obituary. The list of names is global, including entomologists from Asia. This book is a reference source for professionals and students of entomology and related disciplines.
Artikelname: A Field Guide to the Insects of Britain & Northern Europe (3rd edition)
Artikelbeschreibung: This wholly updated and reset edition - the first since 1976 - brings this classic field guide right up to date. Although it has been completely rewritten, it still follows the same structure that was so highly praised in the previous editions. The first part of the book is a general introduction to the insect world, which is followed by the first of the many excellent illustrated identification keys. This primary key leads into the core of the book, the order descriptions. In each case these give a short introduction to the key features of the order, including details of their biology, followed by specific identification keys. By following the keys it is therefore possible for a beginner to identify nearly every species of insect, and learn about its biology at the same time. The text is illustrated with over 300 explanatory drawings and the 60 colour plates show 778 of the common species.
Artikelname: A Fly for the Prosecution: How Insect Evidence Helps Solve Crimes
Artikelbeschreibung: The forensic entomologist turns a dispassionate, analytic eye on scenes from which most people would recoil--human corpses in various stages of decay, usually the remains of people who have met a premature end through accident or mayhem. To Lee Goff and his fellow forensic entomologists, each body recovered at a crime scene is an ecosystem, a unique microenvironment colonized in succession by a diverse array of flies, beetles, mites, spiders, and other arthropods: some using the body to provision their young, some feeding directly on the tissues and by-products of decay, and still others preying on the scavengers. Using actual cases on which he has consulted, Goff shows how knowledge of these insects and their habits allows forensic entomologists to furnish investigators with crucial evidence about crimes. Even when a body has been reduced to a skeleton, insect evidence can often provide the only available estimate of the postmortem interval, or time elapsed since death, as well as clues to whether the body has been moved from the original crime scene, and whether drugs have contributed to the death. An experienced forensic investigator who regularly advises law enforcement agencies in the United States and abroad, Goff is uniquely qualified to tell the fascinating if unsettling story of the development and practice of forensic entomology.

Artikelname: A Natural History of Nettles
Artikelbeschreibung: The first book ever on the much maligned nettles of the world presents a story of these followers of mankind and his cattle throughout history. This study centres on the most abundant and sub-cosmopolitan common stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), but also deals with other nettles throughout the world. Tropical tormentors rich in species include the notorious nettle trees with their formidable stings which fascinated the Europeans after their discovery by botanists on the round-the-world trips of exploration in the 17-19th centuries. Many people on their travels will have met the nettle trees of the Indo-Malay region and other stinging nettles in North and South America, India, etc., which sting and have beautiful flowers but are called nettles; these are also dealt with. The first microscopists and their descriptions of the beautiful stinging hair; the uncovering of the mechanism of its action and the more recent elucidation of the toxins causing the characteristic symptoms is a fascinating one and takes up 3 chapters. The book includes the 100 major scientific works published on the common stinging nettle and never brought to the notice of the general public before. The author spent six years studying the ecology of the nettle patch, its invertebrate herbivores (mainly insects) and vertebrate herbivores (cattle, deer, etc.,) and their interactions with other plants: its secret life is recorded in line drawings and photographs (1000+ individual items). It was not possible to publish these in colour but they are in full colour on a CD-ROM (300 dpi) at the back of the book. Covered also are nettle folklore, fibre use in World War I & II, as a food, fodder, herbal medicine, growth as a competitor plant, habitats, sex (unique exploding stamens), breeding systems, variation, evolution etc.!! Some the world's most beautiful butterflies would not exist without nettles.

Artikelname: Aquatic Insects of North Europe Vol 2 Odonata and Diptera
Artikelbeschreibung: Truly aquatic insects species are in North Europe found in ten different orders, representing a wide variety of form and life styles. Most diverse are the dipterans, the two-winged flies and midges, including among others the notorious blood-sucking pests of the boreal and subarctic regions. Other diverse orders are chiefly the beetles and caddisflies, including several hundreds of species occupying most of the available freshwater environments. Besides the aquatic beetles and bugs, insects classified as aquatic normally develop in water, whereas the adult flying forms are terristrial. Swarming mayflies and hovering libellulas are well-known characteristics of lake and stream shores, whereas their aquatic larvae remain more anonymous for the general naturalist. On the contrary, insect larvae are nowadays widely used in environmental monitoring, the actual species composition at a locality providing reliable evidence on the impacts of acidification and pollution. Environmental applications have engaged many people in the identification on aquatic insect larvae, on scientific, commercial or governmental basis. however, these activities have been hampered by a general lack of an up-to-date standard work providing mordern nomenclature and reliable identification keys including all taxa known from the region. The present handbook is designed to fill this gap, as far as taxonomic knowledge is available. Geographically, the handbook focuses on the Nordic Countries, i. e. Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Most information included will be correct also for the rest of Northern Europe, although some more southern taxa may be absent from the identification keys and check lists. The handbook is designed to serve several important purposes. The introductory text together with the many literature references provided for each order or family is a rich source of information on natural history, morphology, faunistics, classification and identification. The richly illustrated identification keys are generally given for both larvae and adults at least to the generic level. Check lists record the distributions of all species known from the region on a national basis. About 30 highly qualified European specialists on aquatic insects have contributed to this handbook in providing overviews of the taxa of their speciality. Each chapter follows a common format in order to ease the usage of the handbook.

Artikelname: Bush Boy to Bug Man
Artikelbeschreibung: Ten years in the life of a young New Zealander in the Forest Service - he's physically tough, untutored but keen to get ahead - bring about an amazing metamorphosis. The Technical Trainee of the early pages is barely recognisable as the double-degreed professional entomologist - the 'bug man' - who emerges in statu imaginis at the end of 1954. Adventures and dangers lie in wait along the trees to bees trail for the budding academic - and they're not all winged or four-legged! This delightfully written autobiographical 'slice' shows how gutsy determination and two inspirational texts took the author to his chosen speciality and an international career. Born in Ruawai, Tom White grew up in Hawera. After his time in the NZ Forest Service as a Technical Trainee, he was a Forest Entomologist at the FRI in Rotorua. From there he went to the University of Adelaide in South Australia and was a Senior Lecturer in Zoology before going to the University of the South Pacific as Professor of Biology. From there he returned to Australia as Dean of Applied Science at Charles Sturt University. He has also lectured and researched in Britain, the USA, South Africa, China and Italy, and is now an Hon. Research Fellow at the Waite Institute of the University of Adelaide.
Artikelname: Caddisflies the Underwater Architects
Artikelbeschreibung: Caddisflies constitute the insect order Trichoptera in which some 10,000 species are known in the world, including about 1400 in North America. Fossil evidence shows that caddisflies originated in the Triassic period, 200-250 million years ago. They are important links in the movement of energy and nutrients through freshwater ecosystems due largely to the extraordinary diversification in their larval architecture, which includes portable and stationary shelters, silken filter nets, and osmotically semipermeable cocoons. Glenn Wiggins's Caddisflies is the foremost comprehensive reference source about these insects and is concerned with behavioural ecology, evolutionary history, biogeography, and biological diversity.
Wiggins outlines fundamental concepts of aquatic ecology, illuminating the ways in which caddisflies help to make fresh waters work. Essential features of morphology, biology, and distribution are outlined for the twenty-six North American families of caddisflies and illustrated diagnostic keys are provided for larvae, pupae, and adults. The author also brings together information on caddisflies from widely scattered sources and provides comprehensive coverage of the scientific literature.

Artikelname: Ecological Methods in Forest Pest Management
Artikelbeschreibung: This book is about the management of forest pests. It focuses predominantly on insect pests, but many examples relate to fungal pathogens, some of which are vectored by forest insects. The central theme of the book is the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the main impetus for which comes from the need to use environmentally sensitive methods of control appropriate to both semi-natural and plantation forests. Such forests are likely to be managed not only for timber production but also for recreation and to enhance biodiversity. An introductory chapter describes how forests have been transformed by exploitation and management and how altering the composition and distribution of forests can contribute to pest problems. Subsequent chapters focus on the 'techniques' of management and control that contribute to IPM, considering in turn plant health, risk-rating, silviculture, tree resistance, biological control, microbial control and semiochemicals. By focussing on these important elements of management, the aim is to provide a critical analysis of the theory and practice of each one in relation to key aspects of both pest and forest ecology. The final chapter on IPM brings together elements of the previous chapters, discussing them in the context of the economic and environmental impact of pests, the economics of control, and the role of decision support systems. Detailed case studies are provided and future developments in IPM discussed in relation to sustainability, conservation and the potential impact of climate change.

Artikelname: Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects:Plecoptera: Illustrated Keys to Known Families, Genera, and Species in South Amer
Artikelbeschreibung: This text is part of a series designed to facilitate identification of South American insects likely to be encountered in, on, or near water, on wetlands, and in unusual aquatic habitats. It permits identification of all known adults and larvae. Each volume of the "Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects" begins with a short general introduction. The scope of this volume is the Plecoptera. It includes all species known from South America as of the year 2002 and permits a state-of-the-art identification of the species. In the case of specimens belonging to undescribed species or those not previously reported from South America, it permits identification to genus or family and gives the reader reasonable certainty that his specimen does not belong to the known fauna of the continent. The keys are richly illustrated to permit non-specialists in the group to reliably identify specimens. Taxonomic revisions are intentionally avoided, but doubtful taxa are so designated in the keys. Artikelname: For Love of Insects
Artikelbeschreibung: Imagine beetles ejecting defensive sprays as hot as boiling water; female moths holding their mates for ransom; caterpillars disguising themselves as flowers by fastening petals to their bodies; termites emitting a viscous glue to rally fellow soldiers - and you will have entered an insect world once beyond imagining, a world observed and described down to its tiniest astonishing detail by Thomas Eisner. The story of a lifetime of such minute explorations, "For Love of Insects" celebrates the small creatures that have emerged triumphant on the planet, the beneficiaries of extraordinary evolutionary inventiveness and unparalleled reproductive capacity. To understand the success of insects is to appreciate our own shortcomings, Eisner tells us, but never has a reckoning been such a pleasure. Recounting exploits and discoveries in his laboratory at Cornell and in the field in Uruguay, Australia, Panama, Europe and North America, Eisner time and again demonstrates how inquiry into the survival strategies of an insect leads to clarifications beyond the expected; insects are revealed as masters of achievement, forms of life worthy of study and respect from even the most recalcitrant entomophobe. Filled with descriptions of his ingenious experiments and illustrated with photographs, this book makes readers participants in the grand adventure of discovery on a scale infinitesimally small and infinitely surprising.

The comprehensive Introduction, with contributions by specialist authors, includes chapters on nomenclature and classification; the history of the study of Orthoptera; distribution and history of the British species (D. R. Ragge); life history; song and courtship; predators, parasites and diseases; locating and collecting; rearing and culturing; sound recording (]. F. Burton); and photography (R. & C. Ford). There is also a useful glossary. The Systematic Section contains a check list of species mentioned in the text, a comprehensive key to and details ofthe description, song, life-history and behaviour, habitat, distribution (together with a vice-county map) and status of each species, and an account of casuals and migrants.
The remaining parts of the book give special emphasis to types of habitat (with colour plates) and the vital importance of their conservation, and include the dot-distribution maps based on records supplied to the Biological Record Centre, Monks Wood, by contributors to the Orthoptera Recording Scheme. Five appendices provide practical information: charts of offshore island and vice-county records (which can be added to by the user); details of outstanding sites; a list of several hundred localities cited in the work giving their grid references and vice-county numbers; and a list of Welsh, Scottish and Irish native language names of orthopteroid species. Extensive references to the literature and an index to English and scientific names complete the text. An addendum to this edition contains recent records.
The superb colour plates by Denys Ovenden figure all the resident species (and also the migrants), highlighting sex and colour variations and other diagnostic features; his excellent line-drawings enhance the text and representative silhouettes adorn the cover.
Artikelname: Grasshoppers and Bush-crickets of the British Isles

Artikelname: Insect Diets: Science and Technology
Artikelbeschreibung: Many of the advances in entomology during the past century can be attributed to the ability to rear insects successfully on artificial diets. Reliance upon these diets dictates that we understand how and why diets work and why they fail. Insect Diets: Science and Technology explains the intricacies and dynamics of this complex and misunderstood aspect of entomology. This text discusses the various ingredients and processing steps of successful diets. It details various nutrient classes and explains how the constituent parts of diets meet insect nutritional and feeding needs. The author examines diets in terms of overall insect biology, and explores the physical and chemical interactions of food components. This book offers an expert perspective on diet development and how a program of food quality assessment can be applied to rearing systems.Drawing heavily on the field of food science, the book applies the vast resources, information, and methods of this discipline toward a full analysis of the preparation of insect diets, an analysis that serves as a valuable resource in the advancement of entomology.
Artikelname: Insect Diversity Conservation
Artikelbeschreibung: This groundbreaking book is a contemporary global synthesis of the rapidly developing and important field of insect conservation biology. Insects play important roles in terrestrial ecological processes and in maintaining the world as we know it. They present particular conservation challenges, especially as a quarter face extinction within the next few decades. This textbook addresses the ethical foundation of insect conservation, and asks why should we concern ourselves with conservation of a butterfly, beetle or bug? The success of insects and their diversity, which have survived glaciers, is now facing a more formidable obstacle: the meteoric impact of humans. After addressing threats, from invasive alien plants to climate change, the book explores ways insects and their habitats are prioritised, mapped, monitored and conserved. Landscape and species approaches are considered. This book is for undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and managers in conservation biology or entomology, and the wider biological and environmental sciences.

Artikelname: Insect Herbivore-Host Dynamics
Artikelbeschreibung: Literature currently available on the population dynamics of insect herbivores tends to favour top-down regulation of abundance by the action of natural enemies. This unique volume challenges this paradigm and shows that tree dwelling species of aphids, through competition for resources, regulate their own abundance. The biology of tree dwelling aphids is examined, particularly their adaptation to the seasonal development of their host plants. When host plant quality is favourable aphids, by telescoping generations, can achieve prodigious rates of increase, which their natural enemies are unable to match. Using analyses from long-term population studies and experiments, this book introduces students and research workers to insect herbivore-host dynamics using the interaction between aphids and trees as a model.
Artikelname: Insect Physiological Ecology: Mechanisms and Patterns
Artikelbeschreibung: This book provides a modern, synthetic overview of interactions between insects and their environments from a physiological perspective that integrates information across a range of approaches and scales. It shows that evolved physiological responses at the individual level are translated into coherent physiological and ecological patterns at larger, even global scales. This is done by examining in detail the ways in which insects obtain resources from the environment, process these resources in various ways, and turn the results into energy which allows them to regulate their internal environment as well as cope with environmental extremes of temperature and water availability. The book demonstrates that physiological responses are not only characterized by substantial temporal variation, but also shows coherent variation across several spatial scales. At the largest, global scale, there appears to be substantial variation associated with the hemisphere in which insects are found. Such variation has profound implications for patterns of biodiversity as well as responses to climate change, and these implications are explicitly discussed. The book provides a novel integration of the understanding gained from broad-scale field studies of many species and the more narrowly focused laboratory investigations of model organisms. In so doing it reflects the growing realization that an integration of mechanistic and large-scale comparative physiology can result in unexpected insights into the diversity of insects.

Artikelname: Insects on Dock Plants
Artikelbeschreibung: This book deals with docks and sorrels, members of the genus Rumex. There are 13 species native to the British Isles (Kent, 1992)*. Many of these have a world-wide distribution and some are considered major weeds. A high proportion of the insect species associated with Rumex are specialists in that they are restricted to the genus, or at least to the small family (Polygonaceae) to which the plants belong. This may be because the plants tend to have high levels of calcium oxalate in their tissues which may protect them from many generalist feeders. Insects which can feed on dock are of special interest because of their potential as biological control agents.
In this book we have brought together information on those insect species which have a special association with Rumex and also some common generalists which may be found feeding on the plants. We have also included the important insect predators and parasitoids of the herbivores, many of which have themselves a close association with the food plant. In all we include in the identification keys over 60 species of insects. Many of these are common and widespread but their relative abundance will vary from year to year and from place to place. We do not include casual visitors to the plants nor other invertebrates such as mites and slugs, although Key 11 will help in the recognition of these groups. The majority of the species of insects listed can be found on Rumex obtusifolius and R. crispus, though some, particularly amongst the weevils and aphids, are specialists on the smaller Rumex species. In the first part of the book we introduce the species of Rumex and some common and easily studied insect species, and we consider how the insects and plants interact.
In the second part of the book are keys for the identification of species of Rumex and insects which are likely to be found on them.
Artikelname: Insects,Plants and Microclimate
Artikelbeschreibung: Meteorologists are primarily interested in the atmosphere rather than in the layer of air immediately above the ground surface, where factors such as temperature, humidity and wind speed can differ greatly from values measured in a weather station. But most plants and insects live in this boundary layer, and if we wish to understand their ecology, we must use techniques very different from those used by meteorologists. The very local climate near the ground is called "microclimate" and its study is usually called "micrometeorology".Meteorologists go to a great deal of trouble to avoid measuring microclimate. The instruments used in microclimate measurement usually differ from those used by meteorologists in three ways. In the first place, they are much smaller. In a weather station, size is unimportant, and the slow response of a large thermometer may even be considered an advantage in that it averages out short-term variations in temperature. In microclimate measurement, we are interested in short-term changes which may, for example, correlate with aspects of insect behaviour. Small thermometers have the advantage that they respond rapidly and are little affected by direct solar radiation. The second difference is that microclimate instruments are not located in a specially screened and protected environment; instead, they are put exactly where the measurement is required. This is why thermometers used in microclimate work are likely to get exposed to direct sunlight and should therefore be small. The third difference is that microclimate instruments are read much more often than once a day, and may even be continuously monitored. Most microclimate instruments are electrical sensors connected to meters that measure voltage, current or resistance.

Artikelname: Jungle Bugs :Masters of Camouflage and Mimicry
Artikelbeschreibung: Insects have lived on our planet for about 450 million years and are found in every one of the habitats that have appeared over that long period. The roughly 1 million species of insects all have predators, and during their long tenure, they have evolved many subtle ways to escape being eaten. Camouflag, the ability to hide in plain sight, and mimicry, the ability to mimic other dangerous or unpalatable animals, are two strategies very well developed in the insect world. Purser has been photographing insects in jungle areas all over the world since the 1970s, and this collection of his images reveals the amazing ways insects hide from their predators. From moths and katydids that resemble leaves to butterfly chrysalids that dangle like crumpled foliage, the camouflage exhibited by tropical insects is truly amazing. Even more astonishing are the mimics: palatable butterflies that have copied the wing patterns of poisonous species and butterflies with false heads on their wings.

Artikelname: Land Snails of the British Isles
Artikelbeschreibung: One of the very useful and inexpensive Shire Albums covering the Land Snails found in Britain
Artikelname: Maggots, Murder and Men; memories and reflections of a forensic entomologist
Artikelbeschreibung: In this absorbing book, the author examines in some detail the way in which this fascinating and sometimes macabre profession is practised, based on his own particular study of the life-histories of Diptera ? especially blowflies: the nature of the evidence to be looked for and how it should be evaluated, and the sources of material for examination. The author cites many high-profile cases, some of them notorious crimes, both from the present day and also from the historical (and even the prehistoric and mythical) past, and considers the motivation which leads to murder, comparing his own approach with that of one of his fictional forerunners whom he much admires ? Sherlock Holmes. The book is as gripping and readable as a good thriller but also highlights the author?s disquiet at the present standing of forensic science in this country.
Artikelname: Millipedes and Centipedes
Artikelbeschreibung: Millipedes or "thousand leggers" have become important invertebrate pets widely available in many shops. These harmless, often very attractive animals are famous for their numerous legs, herbivorous diets, and general ease of care, but little has been written on them for the average hobbyist. The Guide to Owning Millipedes and Centipedes covers a broad spectrum of millipedes, from small pink and orange species to the giant African blacks (10 inches long) and colorful western desert millipedes. The goal is to provide basic information on the natural history and terrarium care of a variety of millipedes, with hints on identification of the types seen most often. Also covered are the fast-moving, venomous centipedes, flattened many-legged predators that appeal to many hobbyists but remain little understood in the terrarium.
Artikelname: Parasite Rex: Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures
Artikelbeschreibung: For decades parasites were the pariahs of science. Only recently have biologists begun to appreciate that these diverse and complex organisms are the most highly evolved life forms on earth. In this work, Carl Zimmer takes the reader on a tour of the strange and bizzare world that parasites inhabit, and recounts the voyages of these wonders of creation. Parasites can: rewrite DNA; rewire the brain; genetically engineer viruses as weapons; and turn healthy hosts into the living dead. This book follows researchers in parasitology as they attempt to penetrate the mysteries of these omnipotent creatures who control evolution, ecxosystems, and perhaps the future of the human race.
Artikelname: Parasites, People, and Places:Essays on Field Parasitology
Artikelbeschreibung: Professor Gerald W. Esch is one of the world?s leading ecological parasitologists. Here, he presents a series of essays on classic examples of field parasitology. The essays focus on the significance of the work and its contribution to the field but also on the people and particularly the sites at which the work took place. Taken together, the essays represent a beautifully written account of the development of an entire field of scientific endeavour spanning a period of 50 years or more. The essays are not meant to be academic in a scientific sense, but there is a great deal of science in them. The book will be of great value to all parasitologists and ecologists, but also to anyone interested in how biological field work is carried out and how it contributes to greater understanding of the natural world.

Artikelname: Phasmids of Borneo
Artikelbeschreibung: With more than 10% of the world's species found there, Borneo is arguably the best place to study stick insects. Although stick insects, or phasmids, include the largest insects known, they are mostly nocturnal and easily overlooked. In 1838, Hermann Burmeister described the first stick insect from Borneo. During the next 100 years, almost 300 species more were recorded, making the island the richest territory for stick insects in the world. There was then a gap of almost 50 years when no new species were recorded from Borneo. However, during the last decade 53 new species have been described: 48 by the author of this book, including 29 which are described here for the first time. This is the first book to deal specifically with the phasmids of Borneo. With over 800 line illustrations and 24 colour photographs of stick insects and their eggs, it contains more illustrations than any book ever published on phasmids. With keys for the identification of species in all the smaller subfamilies, it is invaluable to anyone interested in the identification of this group of Bornean insects. In addition, the book includes a world-wide check list of phasmid genera with all the type species listed.

Artikelname: Plant-Provided Food for Carnivorous Insects
Artikelbeschreibung: Plants provide insects with a range of specific foods, such as nectar, pollen and food bodies. In exchange, they may obtain various services from arthropods. The role of food rewards in the plant-pollinator mutualism has been broadly covered. This book addresses another category of food-mediated interactions, focusing on how plants employ foods to recruit arthropod ?bodyguards? as a protection against herbivores. Many arthropods with primarily carnivorous lifestyles require plant-provided food as an indispensable part of their diet. Only recently have we started to appreciate the implications of non-prey food for plant-herbivore-carnivore interactions. Insight into this aspect of multitrophic interactions is not only crucial to our understanding of the evolution and functioning of plant-insect interactions in natural ecosystems, it also has direct implications for the use of food plants and food supplements in biological control programs. This edited volume provides essential reading for all researchers interested in plant-insect interactions.

Artikelname: Shieldbugs of Surrey
Artikelbeschreibung: Shieldbugs are attractive and fascinating insects but have been little studied in recent years because of the absence of an identification guide in print. Here, at last, the gap is filled since this book includes a new and fully illustrated identification key to all the British species, including those not currently found in Surrey because they are extinct, rare, or confined to the coast.
The great majority of British shieldbugs (some 29 species, approximately three-quarters of the British fauna) have been recorded in the county and these are illustrated by a series of superb colour photographs, both as adults and as juveniles (nymphs). The book follows the same format as other titles in the series and includes a comprehensive account of each species giving details of its biology, distribution, habitat and status as observed in Surrey over the past 25 years, during which time there have been some very remarkable changes. In addition to the species accounts, the book also covers a variety of other subjects including shieldbug predators and parasites, collection, dissection, conservation, and the ?myth of the stinkbug?. As well as the four families popularly known as shieldbugs, (the Acanthosomatidae, Cydnidae, Scutelleridae and Pentatomidae), the book also covers five other allied families of Heteroptera (or true bugs) which are also of particular interest (the Coreidae, Alydidae, Rhopalidae, Pyrrhocoridae and Stenocepalidae). Included amongst these are some of the county?s special rarities such as the Box Bug (Gonocerus aucteangulatus - historically restricted to a single site in Surrey, Box Hill, which has now spread to cover much of the rest of county but is still hardly known elsewhere in the UK), or the colourful Firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus - which established its first British mainland colony under a lime tree in Epsom). Some 17 species are fully covered in species accounts and an accompanying key to allied insects. The latter also includes an additional seven coastal and migrant species which make up the remainder of the British fauna for these families but which have not yet been recorded in the county.
Although a "county" guide the book will prove useful to entomologists in most parts of Britain and Ireland.

Artikelname: The Amazing World of Stick and Leaf Insects
Artikelbeschreibung: From the preface:
When the AES first suggested that I write a second, more advanced book on phasmids for the ever increasing number of enthusiasts, I thought back several years to when I first started serious taxonomic studies on the fauna. My main objective is for this book to satisfy the needs of the serious student, in addition to interesting those enthusiasts who wish to broaden their knowledge of the fauna.
The main section of this book looks at typical, or spectacular, phasmids found in each of the zoogeographical regions; the first attempt to do this in any publication. Other subjects, such as fossil phasmids and essentials for taxonomic study, are also new areas.
Each section has been widely illustrated. The taxonomic problems with studying phasmids, should not put off anyone with a serious interest, who likes a challenge! There is little information on phasmid study readily available for the layman, except for that published in the literature, in various languages. Rather than list references at the end of this book, I have listed the most appropriate references in each section.
The past few years have seen considerable advances in our knowledge of phasmid fauna, in particular with detailed studies on major phasmid collections, a remarkably understudied area, and yet essential to make accurate studies on species. In view of its importance to the taxonomist, I have devoted a section on this book to museum collections, following a series of visits to evaluate most of the major collections.
A likely reason for a greater interest in the phasmid fauna since 1980 is the Phasmid Study Group. Founded in 1980 by Tony lames, with an emphasis on culture of species, its membership now exceeds 500 world-wide, ranging from young children to professional entomologists. Several of its members write important taxonomic papers for scientific journals It has also been a pleasure to write popular articles for publications such as those of the Amateur Entomologists' Society, who publish good quality colour plates to accompany selected articles. Publication in the popular press also encourages interest from the general public. It is my hope that enthusiasts will be able to learn more than the basics about phasmids from this book and, perhaps, pursue further studies. If this book kindles the interest of potential taxonomists or behaviourists, it will have done its job.

Artikelname: The Leaf Miners of Warwickshire
Artikelbeschreibung:
This is the first-ever fauna to appear in Britain that covers all groups of leaf-miners. Although the heart of the work lies in the observations that have been carried out in Warwickshire, particularly during the last 13 years, I have tried to broaden the appeal of the publication by giving some additional consideration to those miners of neighbouring counties and of other parts of the Midlands that have not yet been found in Vice-county 38. This has resulted in the inclusion of 73% of the known British fauna, and if one omits from consideration those miners that are known to be restricted to coastal or northern localities the proportion rises to over 80%. Thus most of the miners of lowland Britain have been listed and naturalists in other coUnties should find this work a useful, though not a complete, guide to their own mining faunas.
Artikelname: The Leafhoppers and Planthoppers of Germany
Artikelbeschreibung: Auchenorrhyncha, the planthoppers and leafhoppers, occur in high density and species richness in almost all terrestrial ecosystems, forming an important component of food webs. They may transmit plant pathogens such as viruses and mycoplasmas, and a few species are among the worlds' worst pests of cereals and other crops. Due to the lack of a comprehensive key, the central European fauna has long been neglected by entomologists, and as a consequence, the knowledge of their life history was rather small. Host relations, in particular, were insufficiently known. This work summarises an extensive data collection combined with a widely scattered literature on a large geographical scale. For the first time, a systematic overview of phenology, food plants, habitat requirements, geographical and altitudinal distribution and economic importance of all Auchenorrhyncha species known from Germany is provided, based on up to date taxonomy. The guild composition of all plant groups on family and species level is analysed and discussed in detail. Further analyses deal with life strategies such as host specificity, dispersal and life cycles
Artikelname: The Praying Mantids
Artikelbeschreibung: Praying mantids have fascinated people for thousands of years. In their Book of the Dead, ancient Egyptians honored the mantis as a minor deity, the "Bird-Fly," whose function was to conduct the souls of the dead to the netherworld. The Chinese bred mantids for fighting and celebrated their ferocity and foolhardy courage (they sometimes attack prey larger than themselves) in songs and poems. Today, mantids continue to seize the imaginations of serious researchers and backyard naturalists with their dramatic method of capturing prey, their bizarre "sexual cannibalism," and their appeal as "beneficial" insects.
The Praying Mantids represents the current state of knowledge on these remarkable insects, bringing together all that is currently understood about their ecology, taxonomy, reproduction, sensory systems, motor behavior, and defense strategies. The chapters reflect the strong personal stamp and intellectual commitment of the contributors, who have all done pioneering work in mantid research. Many of the selections present ground-breaking data on topics not previously explored. The text is enhanced by numerous illustrations, including a gallery of color images, and a final section of the book covers information available nowhere else on rearing and breeding techniques. The foreword is written by Professor John Alcock, a leader in the field of animal behavior.
Generously illustrated and admirably comprehensive, The Praying Mantids is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, and teachers in the life sciences, as well as a fascinating book for hobbyists and anyone interested in animal behavior and natural history.
Chapters: ? The Predatory Behavior of Mantids: Historical Attitudes and Contemporary Questions ? Morphology and Taxonomy ? Ecology of Praying Mantids ? The Ecology and Foraging Strategy of Tenodera angustipennis ? Mating Behavior ? Hearing ? Binocular Vision and Distance Estimation ? Prey Recognition ? Flight and Wing Kinematics ? Prey Capture ? The Hierarchical Organization of Mantid Behavior ? Ontogeny of Defensive Behaviors ? Ethology of Defense against Predators ? Rearing Techniques, Developmental Time, and Life Span Data for Lab-Reared Sphodromantis lineola ? Comparative Aspects of Rearing and Breeding Mantids ? Mantids in Ecological Research ? Histological Techniques for Mantid Research.
