Grasshoppers and Bush-crickets of the British Isles

The large and often brightly coloured grasshoppers and bush-crickets are amongst the best known of all British insects. The lively movements and jaunty 'songs' of the grasshoppers are familiar to everybody who has walked through a flowery meadow on a sunny day and few late summer holidaymakers visiting the south of Britain can fail to be aware of the exotic evening serenade of the bush-crickets. This book introduces the fascinating life history and ecology of these two closely related families and describes the reasons for, and the mechanisms behind, their songs, which are such an important part of the often complex courtship rituals. The adaptations, habitat preference and distribution of the eleven species of grasshopper and ten species of bush-cricket are described and hints on visual identification are given. Further clues to identity are provided by song tables, a unique bonus in the study of British insects. A final chapter suggests places to visit, concentrating on one of the richest areas, the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset.
