Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland Volume 7:part 1: SOFTBACK
The two Introductory chapters are on the subjects ?Vernacular Names and Early History of British Butterflies? and ?Re-establishment of Insect Populations?, an ecological study of value to conservationists.
In the Systematic Section, 25 authors have contributed the most comprehensive and detailed descriptions ever of the 111 species of butterfly that have been recorded in the British Isles (see Plates 4, 8 and 10). Several of these are now extinct as breeding species (e.g. Large Copper, Mazarine Blue, Large Blue and Large Tortoiseshell); others are rare immigrants (e.g. Bath White, Pale Clouded Yellow, Short- and Long-tailed Blues, Camberwell Beauty, Queen of Spain Fritillary, and Monarch butterflies). Some, though recorded in historic times, have never been proved to be resident here and doubt remains about some of the so called ?adventives?(see Plate 22), but all species are included and beautifully illustrated by Richard Lewington.
