There are three special chapters in this volume in addition to the comparatively short Systematic Section. In the first, Malcolm Scoble reviews the ?Classification of the Lepidoptera? on a world basis and puts the British fauna in perspective. The second, on ?Resting Posture in the Lepidoptera? with representative colour illustrations (see Vol. 7(2), Plate A), provides a welcome link between classification as the taxonomic orientated study of museum workers and the observations of living species by workers in the field. Both are, of course, essential tools for the systematic treatment of moths and butterflies, as their scientific names reflect not only their appearance but also their behaviour. Michael Tweedie?s photographs illustrate his text. The third chapter is a mammoth ?Life History Chart of the British Lepidoptera, containing a condensed synopsis of the natural history of the nearly 2600 species recorded in Britain - a tour-de-force by the series senior editor, Maitland Emmet. The Systematic Section covers the families Lasiocampidae (e.g. Eggars and Lappets), Saturniidae (Emperor Moth) and Endromidae (Kentish Glory) (see Plate 3), and the Drepanidae (e.g. Hook-tips) and Thyatiridae (e.g. Peach Blossom and Lutestrings).
