Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland vol 3:SOFTBACK

This is the seventh volume to be published in this major series on the whole of the British Lepidoptera. It covers 240 British species in the microlepidoptera families Yponomeutidae sensu lato, Epermeniidae, Schreckensteiniidae, Coleophoridae and Elachistidae.

The Yponomeutidae are treated by David Agassiz, who has also written the introductory chapter on 'Invasions of Lepidoptera into the British Isles'; the Epermeniidae are by Charles Godfray and Philip Sterling; the Schreckensteiniidae (represented by only one species) and the Coleophoridae are by A. Maidand Emmet, with important contributions on the latter family by John Langmaid, Keith Bland and Martin Corley, and Jozef Razowski who illustrated the genitalia of all the coleophorids; and the Elachistidae are by Keith Bland, who drew his own text figures. The Systematic Section, following the established format, gives a full description, details of life history and a distribution map (including vice-county records up to mid- 1996) of each species. To reflect the large number of changes that have taken place since the publication ofKloet & Hincks' A check list of British insects: Lepidoptera (1972), up-to-date check lists have been included where necessary. To make correlation possible between the new arrangement and that in the Life History Chart published in Vol. 7, part 2, the number allocated to each species in the latter is given. The latest scheme of classification for the whole of the British Lepidoptera down to subfamily level has also been included to show the changes relating to volumes already published.Containing much original research, particularly into the hitherto undescribed early stages of many species (including one coleophorid with remarkable photographs by Jane Feehan), this volume gready augments information previously available only in continental works. There are 109 text figures, including genitalia (most containing many individual drawings), wing venations and other structures, as well as 8 plates oflarval cases (in duotone) and 9 of imagines (in colour) by Richard Lewington. Comprehensive references and indexes complete the work.
