Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland - Vol. 9: Sphingidae to Noctuidae (Noctuinae and Hadeninae)SOFTBACK

The Introductory chapter examines the function of ?Eversible Structures?, the little-known brush-organs which are everted from the legs, thorax or abdominal segments of the males of various families of Lepidoptera. They are associated with courtship behaviour and with defence but much research remains to be done before their function can be fully understood. The Systematic Section contains the well-known families Sphingidae (Hawkmoths), Notodontidae (Prominents), Lymantriidae (Tussocks), Arctiidae (Tiger Moths), the doubtful Thaumetopoeidae, the rare adventive Ctenuchidae, and the small family of Nolidae (see Plate 6), followed by the first two subfamilies of the very large family of Noctuidae (?owlets?), containing among others the numerous Darts, Drabs, Yellow Underwings and Wainscots.
