Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland - Vol. 2: Cossidae to Heliodinidae:HARDBACK
The special Introductory chapter on ?British Aposematic Lepidoptera? - those species which protect themselves by warning coloration, scents, sounds and behaviour is by the distinguished zoologist and biochemist, Dame Miriam Rothschild. The volume contains an invaluable key to the Lepidoptera families of Ditrysia (for British species only) which covers all families except those in Volume 1. The Systematic Section deals with species in fifteen families (Cossidae, Zygaenidae, Limacodidae, Psychidae, Tineidae, Ochsenheimeriidae, Lyonetiidae, Hieroxestidae, Gracillariidae, Phyllocnistidae, Sesiidae, Choreutidae, Glyphipterigidae, Douglasiidae and Heliodinidae), two of which (Ochsenheimeriidae and Hieroxestidae) have since been reduced to subfamily level and another, Lyonetiidae, has since been split, one subfamily being raised to family level: Bucculatricidae. Among these primitive ?microlepidoptera? families are three which are usually included in works on macrolepidoptera - the Cossidae (Goat and Leopard Moths) (illustrated here on Plate 3) , Zygaenidae (Burnets and Foresters) (illustrated on Plate 4), and the Sesiidae (Clearwings).
