A Wood in Ascam,a Study in Wetland Conservation
This book sets out to commemorate the publication one hundred years ago of a series of articles on Askham Bog. They appeared in a magazine called The Natural History Journal which was 'conducted by the Societies in Friends' [Quaker] Schools' throughout Britain. Subsequently they were collected and printed together, thereby forming one of the first accounts ever produced of a single habitat from the point of view of its geology, geomorphology, climate, conchology, lepidoptera, birds, flowers and ferns, and beetles. Each article was written by an acknowledged expert in his own field, as an encouragement for pupils at the York Quaker School to study the natural history of such a famous and much-visited site within easy reach of York.
