Artikelname: Drosophila :A Practical Approach
Artikelbeschreibung: Drosophila, the scientist's favorite laboratory organism, is a key subject for studying genetics, development, and behavior. The second edition of this popular hands-on guide brings the methodology up-to-date, with contributions from the leading researchers in the field.
Artikelname: Field Guide to the Bumblebees of Great Britain and Irelan
Artikelbeschreibung: Bumblebees are popular and well-loved insects. Yet, surprisingly, the majority of people know little or nothing about them.Over the last two decades, populations of some of the rarer species have seriously declined, and even the commoner ones are no longer as numerous as they once were. This has given cause for alarm since they are important pollinators of wild and garden flowers, fruit trees and some crops. Bumblebee populations have crashed for a number of reasons and we need to know more about these fascinating insects. This guide is for people from all walks of life and aims to create a greater awareness and knowledge of bumblebees.
Artikelname: Hoverflies Of Surrey
Artikelbeschreibung: Surrey is home to an astonishing 209 out of the UK's 270 different species of hoverflies so perhaps it is no surprise that it is also one of the best-recorded counties in Britain. This book is the first to deal with the full range of species found in the County and will hopefully provided a benchmark for other county recording schemes. It has been written with the needs of a variety of users in mind, from hoverfly specialist to anyone with a passing interest in this common but poorly understood group of insects. The book contains a set of detailed species accounts including an extensive list of food plants and conservation notes for site managers. The book also deals with related subjects such as geology, recording techniques and some of the less well-known aspects of individual species' biology. The author, Roger Morris, has had a lifelong interest in entomology and since 1990 has jointly run the national Hoverfly Recording Scheme with Dr Stuart Ball.
Although a "county" guide the book would be useful to entomologists in other areas of Britain and Ireland.
Artikelname: Mayflies
Artikelbeschreibung: Mayflies are common insects throughout Britain but they largely go unnoticed. This book looks at how to recognise the nymphs and the adults, their life history and techniques for their study as well as the illustrated identification keys.
Artikelname: Methuselah Flies: A Case Study in the Evolution of Aging
Artikelbeschreibung: Methuselah Flies presents a trailblazing project on the biology of aging. It describes research on the first organisms to have their lifespan increased, and their aging slowed, by hereditary manipulation. These organisms are fruit flies from the species Drosophila melanogaster, the great workhorse of genetics. Michael Rose and his colleagues have been able to double the lifespan of these insects, and improved their health in numerous respects as well. The study of these flies with postponed aging is one of the best means we have of understanding, and ultimately achieving, the postponement of aging in humans. As such, the carefully presented detail of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control of aging.
Artikelname: Mosquitoes
Artikelbeschreibung: There is a lot of scope for the study of British mosquitoes and this book looks at ways in which this research may be tackled. The life histories of mosquitoes are described and there is the normal identification keys.
Artikelname: Old Turriff
Artikelbeschreibung: Alan Cooper has written several books for us over the past few years and his captions for Old Turriff are typically full and informative. Among the subjects featured are several pictures of the station, plus High Street, Balmellie Street, Main Street, Chapel Street and Skene Croft. My personal favourites, however, are those of the Turra Coo, forcibly sold as a result of a farmer's protest over National Insurance and then later triumphantly returned to him having been bought back by his supporters.
Artikelname: Tachinid Flies
Artikelbeschreibung: An identification key is provided for the adults of British Tachinidae (Diptera). A summary of the biology and distribution of each species is given, including a list of British host records. The natural history of the family is reviewed briefly, with emphasis placed on the reproductive strategies and interactions with the host. A check list includes all old generic and specific names used in the British literature since 1928.
Artikelname: Tephritid Flies
Artikelbeschreibung: One of the excellant "Handbooks for the Indentification of British Insects", this one covering the Tephritid Flies
Artikelname: The Biology of Mosquitoes: Vol 1, Development, Nutrition and Reproduction
Artikelbeschreibung: Mosquitoes are important insects not only because of their major role as disease vectors or nuisance insects but also because they are used as experimental animals for insect physiology. "The Biology of Mosquitoes" covers both the functional and physiological aspects of mosquito biology. The book covers all life stages of mosquitoes and ranges from molecular biology and ultrastructure at one end to behaviour at the other. The topics are covered in detail, and to a standard to satisfy specialists but care has also been taken to make the contents intelligible to any informed entomologist or biologist. This book should be of interest to researchers in medical entomology, mosquito biology, health workers and interested entomologists.
Artikelname: The British Caddisflies
Artikelbeschreibung: This book fills a gap in the literature of Entomology in which there is no text-book still in print dealing with the Order of the Trichoptera or Caddis Flies. It is not an exhaustive monograph but rather a handbook by means of which collectors may identify their captures and thereby complete a knowledge of the fauna of their districts. The classification of the Trichoptera is based on neuration and the structure of the genitalia rather than on wing-markings, and consequently the author has relied upon figures of those characters, numbering no fewer than 633, with three plates, reproduced from photographs from nature.
Chapters are included on Life History, Structure, Classification and Collecting.

Artikelname: The Chironomidae :Biology and Ecology of Non-biting Midges
Artikelbeschreibung: An account of the ecology of the Chironomidae since 1954 and provides a state-of-the-art account of the family including both pure and applied aspects of research. The book should be valuable to entomologists and ecologists and to workers involved in biological monitoring in the water industry.
Artikelname: The Evolutionary Biology of Flies
Artikelbeschreibung: Though small and occasionally annoying, flies (Dipteria) have had an important role in deepening scientists' understanding of modern biology and evolution. The study of flies has figured prominently in major advances in the fields of molecular evolution, physiology, genetics, phylogenetics, and ecology over the last century. This volume, with contributions from top scientists and scholars in the field, brings together diverse aspects of research and will be essential reading for entomologists and fly researchers.
THIS VOLUME IS DUE TO BE PUBLISHED IN LATE AUGUST 2005. Pre Publication orders can be taken.
Artikelname: The Leaf Miners of Warwickshire
Artikelbeschreibung:
This is the first-ever fauna to appear in Britain that covers all groups of leaf-miners. Although the heart of the work lies in the observations that have been carried out in Warwickshire, particularly during the last 13 years, I have tried to broaden the appeal of the publication by giving some additional consideration to those miners of neighbouring counties and of other parts of the Midlands that have not yet been found in Vice-county 38. This has resulted in the inclusion of 73% of the known British fauna, and if one omits from consideration those miners that are known to be restricted to coastal or northern localities the proportion rises to over 80%. Thus most of the miners of lowland Britain have been listed and naturalists in other coUnties should find this work a useful, though not a complete, guide to their own mining faunas.
Artikelname: The Siphonini (Diptera: Tachinidae) of Europe
Artikelbeschreibung: A detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the European species of Siphonini, this volume presents an analysis and proposal on the systematic position of the Siphonini, together with a key to larger taxonomic entities of Tachinidae. The generic classification is also critically emphasized, and a separate chapter summarizes aspects of the group's natural history: life-cycles, mating behaviour, oviposition strategies etc. The taxonomic section of the text contains identification keys to genera and species, and for each species a diagnosis, description and accounts of the nomenclature, biology and distribution is given. A separate catalogue details the provincial distribution of the 47 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Denmark.
