British Hoverflies

British Hoverflies: an illustrated identification guide was first published in 1983, and rapidly gained an excellent reputation for enabling these attractive flies to be identified more easily and accurately than hitherto. The keys were prepared by Alan Stubbs after extensive testing by both beginners and experienced dipterists. The keys contain illustrations of identification features alongside the couplets, which allows species to be recognised more readily than with previous publications. The text summarises an extensive body of information that was previously dispersed in many publications, as well as including numerous original observations based on many years of fieldwork. The colour plates by Steven Falk are widely acknowledged to be some of the finest painted for any group of British insects.

The book describes all the Hoverflies on the British List, current to the beginning of the year 2002. These enable all currently named British hoverflies to be identified as well as giving references to many recent studies of hoverflies in Britain and abroad.
