Lichens

Lichens are common almost everywhere. They clothe the walls of buildings and the bark of trees, heathy banks and sea-shore rocks, and many other habitats, giving colour and variety to the landscape. Their variation in form and colour is remarkable. This book explains which species grow in particular habitats and how to collect, preserve and study them. Aids for identification are described and some common species are illustrated. Lichens are famous as examples of symbiosis - permanent contact between dissimilar organisms.

They are also famous for their chemistry; most contain unique substances which are much studied by chemists interested in new compounds and botanists who work on lichen relationships. Above all, lichens are used as pollution indicators to monitor our changing environment. This book describes these aspects of lichenology, as well as detailing the use of these plants in dyes, litmus and perfumes. Lichens are important pioneer plants, yet many aspects of their biology are little understood. Most cannot be cultured and their reproduction is steeped in controversy. The author not only tells the reader what is known about lichens, but also indicates what needs to be done in order to push forward the frontiers of knowledge on these fascinating plants.

One of the very useful and inexpensive Shire Albums covering the Lichens found in Britain.
