Artikelname: A Spider's World: Senses and Behavior
Artikelbeschreibung: Spiders are wonderful creatures. Their varied and complex range of behavior and highly developed sensory systems are excellently adapted to the environmental conditions - as is proven by their evolutionary success. Over 400 million years, spiders have developed their sensory organs to a fascinating technical perfection and complexity. In his intriguing book, Professor Friedrich G. Barth puts this technical perfection into the context of "biology", in which the interaction between environment and sensory organs and the selectivity of the senses as a link between environment and behavior play a major role.

Artikelname: Aquatic Mites: From Genes to Communities
Artikelbeschreibung: Although the ancestral home of chelicerates was the sea, the vast majority of modern species live on land. Most students of spiders and mites also restrict themselves to terrestrial habitats. However, a surprising number of mites (Arachnida: Acari) have returned to a watery existence. Approximately 7000 species from the Mesostigmata, Astigmata, Oribatida, and especially the Prostigmata, now live in marine and freshwater habitats. In Aquatic Mites, a dozen chapters explore the distribution, ecology, behavior, genetics, and evolution of the most diverse of these astonishing arachnids. The results of these studies raise as many interesting questions as they answer, and should provoke more investigations of the biology of freshwater and marine Acari.
Artikelname: Biology of Spiders

The author has completely updated and revised chapters on ecology, phylogeny and systematics to reflect current knowledge. Over 200 illustrations are included as well as an extensive reference section. The only modern textbook available on the subject, this will prove an invaluable resource for professionals, students, and researchers in zoology, entomology, ecology and physiology.

Artikelname: Identifying Spiders
Artikelbeschreibung: From the exotic and striking Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula or the venomous Block Widow, to the tiny Money Spider, you will find spiders everywhere. There are over 40,000 described species of spiders, in grassy meadows there will be millions; ponds and lakes will have their quota; and deserts and mountains are no bar to the Order Araneae. There are even highly urbanised spiders that love to inhabit our homes and bathtubs. What is a spider? The identifier shows how spiders differ from other Arachnida and illustrates the structure of spiders, and their place in the animal kingdom. Over 90 species are detailed, their habitats, how they make their fascinating and complex webs, and their distribution, with at-a-glance symbols for easy reference.Identifying Spiders is an invaluable tool for identification and with spectacular photographs accompanying each entry, it explains how to distinguish wolf spiders from crab spiders, orbweavers from cobweb weavers, and huntsmen from jumpers.
Artikelname: Keys to the Families of British Spiders
Artikelbeschreibung: This guide includes all of the 34 families known to occur in Britain. Two identification keys are presented. The first is a traditional dichotomous format, using morphological characters that are visible under low-power magnification; the second key, a tabular guide, includes a range of behavioural and ecological characters and should enable beginners to put a name to spiders in the field. Sections on spider morphology, biology, ecology and a glossary are also provided.
Artikelname: Mites
Artikelbeschreibung: Many mites possess intricate life styles in close association with plant and animal hosts. Their ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually has made efforts to control their populations difficult. This work explores this and other issues
Artikelname: Riceland Spiders of South and Southeast Asia
Artikelbeschreibung: Spiders are among the most omnipresent and numerous predators in both agricultural and natural ecosystems, and without them insect pest populations would become out of control. Their potential as biological control agents can only be appreciated through a greater understanding of their abundance and species composition in different ecological systems. There is therefore a great need for literature providing guidance on spider identification. The spider fauna of several cultivated crops, in a number of regions of the world, has been well documented. There have been some previous attempts to record the spider fauna of rice in South and Southeast Asia, but these are scattered in the journal literature. This volume provides an illustrated guide that can be used by specialists and novices to identify these spiders. The majority of the species covered were collected from a diversity of habitats in the Philippines. The bulk of the book consists of keys to the identification of families, genera and species of Philippine spiders, illustrated by more than 1000 line drawings and 100 colour photographs. A total of 339 species belonging to 134 genera within 26 families are recognized. Of these, 253 species and seven genera are new to science. Distribution maps for individual species and a classification scheme for Philippine riceland spiders are also provided. Overall, the work represents a major contribution to the literature for those interested in spiders or more generally in biological control and crop protection.
Artikelname: Scorpion Biology and Research
Artikelbeschreibung: Scorpions are the only land animals with a fossil record stretching back to the colonization of land by aquatic animals, and they offer a unique array of biochemical, physiological, and ecological adaptations. The chapters cover the full range of research and include introductory material for the general reader as well as detailed and up-to-date findings for the specialist. The editors hope to draw new attention to this important group of arthropods and seek to highlight areas where scorpion research is providing new insight on key biological questions.

Also includes accounts of various aspects of scorpion ecology and biogeography which place the Brazilian species in a worldwide context. Shows why certain species have recently become extinct while others are endangered throughout tropical South America. Far more than an identification guide, this book is a stimulating introduction to the study of scorpions in general.
Artikelname: Scorpions of Southern Africa
Artikelbeschreibung: Although Southern Africa is one of the best places on earth to see and study scorpions, little information is generally available on these misunderstood and often persecuted creatures. "Scorpions of Southern Africa" is both a field guide to the identification of the more common and visible of Southern Africa's rich fauna of 130 scorpion species and a description of the physiology and ecology of scorpions. It dispels myths that portray scorpions as deadly venomous animals to be killed on sight, and offers an intriguing insight into the amazing adaptations that have enabled scorpions to survive over millions of years. Layman's terms are used as far as possible, and a glossary of more complicated terminology is provided. Distribution maps and photographs are given for over 50 Southern African species as well as practical information about where to look for scorpions and how best to handle these often feared creatures.

Artikelname: Spiders (whittett)
Artikelbeschreibung: There is a dazzling array of spiders in the world 40,000 kinds some podgy, some skinny, some flat as pancakes; from giant bird-eaters whose legs would cover a dinner plate to midgets whose bodies wouldn't cover a pinhead. Some pretend to be birds' droppings and others pretend to be ants; some tackle prey as big as a snake, others only eat one fly a year.
Chief amongst their curious attributes, which include being blue-blooded and smelling through their feet, must be their phenomenal silk. Stronger than steel, yet incredibly light and thin, one strand of it long enough to encircle the world would only weigh 12 oz. As well as using silk to engineer their webs, spiders use it to wrap up their food, to make nets for throwing over prey and cocoons for their eggs. And then there is the venom, drop-for-drop often stronger than cobra venom, injected into the prey with formidable fangs or occasionally fired from a distance.
Even the most rabid arachnophobe cannot fail to be entranced by this world full of surprises: spiders that are social, hunting and dining together in strict hierarchy; dedicated mothers carrying their eggs around with them; wildly gesticulating suitors and reluctant brides.
