Making Simple Model Steam Engines
In this book long-time model maker and author Stan Bray describes the construction of a range of uncomplicated miniature steam engines. Starting with a simple model of the first recorded steam engine. the featured designs increase in complexity, though none is difficult to make. Most are based on oscillating engines. models of which were highly popular in the Victorian age, and the range here starts with single-acting. single-cylinder types of various configurations and ranges through a double-acting model to two-cylinder versions. The final engine is known as a clapper. because of the noise it makes when operating. All steam engines require a boiler to operate. and a range of these is also covered, again starting with a very simple design and continuing to a fairly sophisticated vertical boiler. Any of the boilers will drive any of the models and it is up to the builder which boiler is paired with which engine. Plans for regulators and safety valves are also included.
Construction of each of the models is described in the text, but the book also provides plans and drawings for each one, and all measurments appear in metric and imperial. for the benefit of modellers of all ages and preferences in all countries. The models are designed to be built with the minimum of workshop equipment and it is not necessary to have anything more than a corner in the garden shed as the space in which to work. The models can also be very cheap to make - the models illustrated use a large amount of scrap material.
This well-illustrated book will be popular with all would-be and beginner model engineers. as well as those already engaged in the hobby, looking for quick and easy projects to build. The projects are also ideal for those wishing to pass on to the younger generation a knowledge of metalworking and a grounding in how engines work.
