Artikelname: From Punt to Plough: A History of the Fens
Artikelbeschreibung: The counties of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, and Peterborough City Council all lay claim to a part of the Fens. Since Roman times mankind, by his ingenuity, hard work and determination has increased the land mass in this area by one third of the size. It is the largest plain in the British Isles, covering an area of nearly three-quarters of a million acres and is unique to the UK.The fen people know the area as marsh (land reclaimed from the sea) and fen (land drained from flooding rivers running from the uplands). The Fens are unique in having more miles of navigable waterways than anywhere else in the UK. Mammoth drainage schemes during the 17th and 18th centuries, undertaken primarily by Dutch engineers such as Sir Cornelius Vermuyden and Sir Philibert Vernatti, changed the landscape forever - but it could be said that the Fens were not truly drained until the 20th century with improvements being carried out even to this day.Rex Sly's book draws on his many years of research, and his knowledge of and love for this unique area of England shine through on every page.

Artikelname: Southwold
Artikelbeschreibung:
It is said, and not without some justification, that a picture is worth a thousand words. As it happens Southwold, very nearly England's most easterly town, is endlessly written about. Its charm, grace and pure magic have captivated writers and journalists ever since Daniel Defoe visited in 1713. But this book tells the story of Southwold over the last 100 years in pictures. The photographers seized opportunities presented by the late Victorian and early Edwardian era - which also proved to be the golden age of the postcard - to capture Southwold on their glass plate negatives, and also on film. It is all here: the beach, the common, the sea, the town, the people, the wars and the special Southwold occasions. And of course there are some lovely pictures of the eccentric little railway that helped turn a town that lived mainly by fishing into a genteel holiday resort. This book will delight all those who love Southwold and understand its funny ways.
Artikelname: Suffolk Shipping
Artikelbeschreibung: Suffolk is almost surrounded by water. To the north there are the rivers Waveney and Little Ouse, to the west the river Lark, to the south the river Stour, and to the east the North Sea. In the heyday of the North East coal trade, hundreds of sailing colliers negotiated the complex of shoals off the Suffolk coast and the lighthouses at Lowestoft and Orford were welcome beacons on their passage. Today, the coastal trade-is much reduced. The coal trade has gone and has been replaced by traffic fuel, oil, petrol and diesel from the refineries to local distribution depots. On the other hand, bulk cargoes such as grain, stone and timber are still carried by coaster. There are also new trades such as the delivery of steel plate and coastal container services. Suffolk Shipping covers just some of the wide range of vessels that have been apart of the maritime scenery of the county for the past two millennia.
I also have all three shipping volumes by the same author in stock.
