Various companies were responsible for these, but the most famous are probably the ?Fighting Shrewsburys? ? the Shrewsbury & Birmingham, the Shrewsbury & Chester and the Shrewsbury & Hereford railways ? which were the focal point of the struggle between the London & North Western Railway and the Great Western Railway for dominance of the county.
