Artikelname: Hucknall and District
Artikelbeschreibung: This selection of over 200 old images evocatively recreates the rich history pf
Hucknall and the surrounding villages of Papplewick, Linby, Annesley, Newstead and Bulwell.Great social and industrial changes significantly affected the area around the town of Hucknall during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Farming and the textile industry were once the primary sources of employment until the sinking of the collieries during the 1860s dramatically changed the face of Hucknall and the lives of many local people. This book documents community life as it used to be, recalling the people and places central to the history of the area, including Newstead Abbey's most famous occupant, Lord Byron, who lies buried in Hucknall parish church. Images of miners emerging coal-streaked from collieries are preserved alongside vistas of streets, schools, churches and businesses, including Stallards' shoe shop, the Half Moon Hotel and the vibrant stalls of Hucknall Market Place in the 1930s. This is a valuable pictorial history which will delight those who have visited this area of Nottinghamshire and evoke memories of times past for those who have ever lived here.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire...Old Bulwell
Artikelbeschreibung: Now a suburb of Nottingham, this book shows Bulwell in its heyday when it was a busy independent market town. The old Picture House, the trams that served Market Place, Strelley House, floods in 1908 and 1932, and Bestwood ironworks are among the local landmarks featured. Bulwell Hall and its park are included, with a picture of an early twentieth century hot-air balloon ascent from the park. There are also pictures of Highbury Vale, two local collieries, and A. Lowe's bus.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire...Old Retford
Artikelbeschreibung: Retford's impressive market square - both on market day and during quieter times - features alongside pictures of the town's fire engine and crew in the late 1940s, youngsters fishing on the River Idle, Trinity Hospital and the Chesterfield Canal. Also included are Strawberry Terrace, one of the town's former windmills, the Picture House on Carolgate, Retford Grammar School and the royal visit of 1914.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire..Old Kimberley
Artikelbeschreibung: Originally a small farming community, Kimberley flourished following the Industrial Revolution. Pictures of Digby and Kimberley Collieries contrast sharply with rural-looking views of the old Stag Inn and the Knowle. The Victoria Mills and Hardy's famous brewery are featured, as is The Firs, a big house with an interesting history that was demolished despite local opposition in 1988. Kimberley locals are seen parading through the town for the Coronation of King George V, and there are pictures of both the town's railway stations and the Kimberley viaduct, another landmark to have been demolished.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire..Old Mansfield Woodhouse
Artikelbeschreibung: The attractive village of Mansfield Woodhouse was originally rural, but from the nineteenth century many of its inhabitants operated framework knitting machines for a living. Then, in 1903, the opening of Sherwood Colliery saw a great influx of new workers and a consequent building boom to accommodate them. A railway station reached the village in 1875, and trams followed in 1906 allowing the population greater freedom of movement. Pictures in the book include several of the trams and tramway, the Royal Hotel, the Angel Inn, Clerkson's Hall, Mansfield and Sherwood Collieries, the mines rescue station and Woodhouse Castle.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire..Old Ollerton
Artikelbeschreibung: Rural Ollerton grew to become a reasonable sized village thanks to its situation at the crossing of two important roads. As a result it developed two large inns - the White Hart and the Hop Pole. In the 1920s neighbouring New Ollerton was built to accommodate a large influx of miners as coal began to be exploited at Ollerton Colliery. The pictures in this book show both the picturesque old village and New Ollerton. Ollerton Hall, Forest House, the National School, Rufford Cottages, Rufford Abbey and even the erecting of the village's first telegraph pole are included among the pictures. There are also several attractive views showing the village's main streets and old shops.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire..Old Tuxford and Laxton
Artikelbeschreibung: Picturesque Tuxford, historically important as a staging post on the Great North Road, is seen during Edwardian days when horses and carts were the dominant mode of transport, with only the odd lorry and occasional car on the quiet streets. Eldon Street, Newcastle Street, the Excelda Cafe, the market place, the Newcastle Arms, Markham Moor Inn, Lincoln Street and Ashvale all feature, along with an interesting postcard of 'The Hell', a grotto created by eccentric R. S. Wilson of Tuxford Hall. Pictures of leafy Laxton show the village when its roads were still unsurfaced and it was safe for children to line up across the main street for a photograph. In another view livestock is seen grazing on the grass verges beside the road, reminiscent of a picture taken in Tuxford showing a flock of sheep being herded down Eldon Street.

Artikelname: Nottinghamshire..Old Worksop
Artikelbeschreibung: Vintage Worksop pubs such as the Travellers Rest in Gateford Road and the Fox Inn on Lowtown Street appear in this fine collection of (mostly) Edwardian pictures. Industry is represented by the Worksop & Retford Brewery buildings, Shaw's wire rope factory and Priory Mill, which burnt down in 1912. Pictures of Sparken Hill show it when it was lined by woods and fields, rather than houses. The impressive Victorian architecture of Worksop's main shopping streets is shown off in several shots of Market Place, Bridge Street and Newcastle Avenue, and there's a good view of the ornate Electric Theatre, one of the town's former cinemas.
