Artikelname: Canterbury..Paul Crampton
Artikelbeschreibung: Canterbury is a collection of ovet 200 old photogtaphs, many of which are drawn from the author's own extensive private collection. The book provides the reader with a leisurely stroll through the streets of Canterbury in six different time periods, each represented by its own chapter. Many lost scenes and buildings are included and the vehicles and people of each era are also very much in evidence. We see Canterbury as it was, both before and after the Blitz. Many buildings can be seen which are now lost to us forever. New buildings appear on the bomb sites, however, and we see the motor car really begin to make its ptesence felt. Rebuilding continued into the 1960s and spread into areas of the city unaffected by the bombing. Regeneration was widespread, though the ring-road swept away many intact and cherished buildings. The final section of the book looks at the 1970s and at more recent years in which demolition slowed as the value of conservation was realised.

Artikelname: Folkestone in Old Photographs
Artikelbeschreibung: The departure of the last ferry from Folkestone in December 1991 brought to an end almost 150 years of cross-channel passenger shipping from the port. As quickly as the past recedes however, the future arrives, and the Channel Tunnel terminal now covers many acres of what was once farmland. The photographs in this selection stop the clock. They recall a genteel resort with its roots in a thriving fishing village community, and a townscape unaffected by the tyranny of the motor car. They remind us of the delightful shop fronts which predated the chain store domination of the present and of the variety of buses which once moved people around. There are glimpses of vanished streets and alleys, and of once familiar sights which are now no more than memories.
Artikelname: Hop Pickers of Kent and Sussex
Artikelbeschreibung: This is a fascinating account of the experiences of happy hop-picking holidays in the days when whole families travelled out of smoky London to enjoy the clean country air of Kent and Sussex. Apart from this type of escape there was little opportunity for a break for thousands of city dwellers. When mechanisation took over the holidays stopped and so did the opportunity to earn extra money for Christmas and clothes for a growing family.
Artikelname: Hythe
Artikelbeschreibung: This intriguing selection of over 200 photographs brings to life the ancient Cinque Port of Hythe, in Kent. For centuries the town has been in the forefront of our defence against invaders. It sent eleven ships against the Spanish Armada and in the early years of the nineteenth century, the Royal Military Canal and a long line of Martello Towers were built to repel Napoleon's forces. The many engravings and photographs in the book give a graphic portrait of a bygone era, when smuggling was one ofthe town's main activities; when soldiers from the nineteenth century School of Musketry bought a bustling life to the town; when well-to-do Victorians strolled up and down the Marine Parade or ventured nervously into a bathing machine; when locals travelled in a horse-drawn 'toast-rack' (so-called because everyone was packed-in, facing the same way); when newly-caught fish were taken round the streets in fish carts; when the lifeboat depended on oars and a sail; when there were over 20 windmills in the town; and when the military establishments in the area became training camps for thousands of British and Canadian soldiers.Yet Hythe today is peaceful, still managing to retain an enviable serenity which captivates and charms both visitors and local residents. In this wonderful volume, the authors capture the essence of that serenity and of Hythe through changing times.
Artikelname: Hythe: The Second Selection
Artikelbeschreibung: This intriguing selection of over 200 old photographs explores the lives of the people living in and around the ancient Cinque Port of Hythe in Kent over the last century. Under Roman rule, Hythe was one of the main entry ports into Britain and it long played a crucial role as a defence against invasion from the French and Spanish. But times have changed. Its position today near the Channel Tunnel makes it one of the first towns to welcome Europeans to our shores. The novelist Elizabeth Bowen, who lived on the hill leading to the ancient St Leonard's church, with its timeless views over the old town and out towards the sea, wrote of the 'flamboyant and hardy and unmawkish townspeople', adding 'The Hythe people are bound together by a sense of place... and everyone pulls together. Those who fish are the same men who take out the lifeboats. 'All aspects of everyday life are explored, from work, trade and industry, to religion and recreation, building up a valuable insight into the society of the area. Each image is accompanied by a wealth of local historical knowledge.A nostalgic journey for those who have lived in the area, Hythe the Second Selection also offers newcomers a chance to discover how things used to be.

Artikelname: Wingham, Adisham and Littlebourne
Artikelbeschreibung: Since the development of photography in
the middle of the nineteenth cenrury, the picrure of our pasts provided by the written chronicle, the museum artefact or the failing memory has been augmented by the most vivid and immediate relic of former times-the photograph. Authenticating even as it describes, the photograph is of its time in a way that other representations of the past are not. This photographic portrait of a period at once familiar and remote illustrates some of the changes that overtook one corner of agricultural Kent between the end of the Victorian period and the Second World War. The rural communities of Adisham and Littlebourne recalled by these views are a thing of the past now, but both villages possess considerable histories, which modern residents still enjoy discovering. The medieval village of Wingham sat astride the Roman Road from Canterbury to Roman Richborough and still possesses a fine High Street, but much has vanished with the passage of time.
