Deal
The Borough of Deal that we know today is a far cry from the town that King Henry VIII thought important enough to defend with no less than three castles in the sixteenth century and William Cobbett, in the early nineteenth century, could describe as a 'villainous place', in his book of travels, Rural Rides. Today it is friendlier, and better known as a popular seaside resort. This collection of nearly 200 old photographs of Deal recalls this later period, from the time when Victorian and Edwardian ladies fished from the pier or strolled on rhe beach in long dresses and big hats, through the war years to the activities and events of the modern resort. This book will rake the reader on a nostalgic trip around Deal and some of the surrounding villages, triggering memories for some and inrroducing newcomers and a younger generation to a world that has now largely disappeared.
