Hitchin
Hitchin is a market town that has seen a great deal of expansion over the last hundred years. Though some fine early buildings have been lost in the name of development, much of the town's central core remains intact, with some outstanding vistas and medieval streets. In this new collection, local historian Simon Walker has brought together a fascinating range of photographs capturing the way the town once appeared and documenting some of the changes that have taken place. Many are rare and previously unpublished, and all are accompanied by informative captions that provide a wealth of local detail.Among the views are streets as they appeared as far back as 1860 and cattle markets that are no more. Photographs of schools, churches and public houses document life in Hitchin over the centuries and the book also celebrates the people that have lived and worked here over the years. For long-time residents this collection will provide a nostalgic trip back to the Hitchin of the past, while newcomers will be intrigued by this new look at the fascinating history and heritage of the town.
