Artikelname: Ripley & Codnor
Artikelbeschreibung: This fascinating collection of around 250 old photographs shows in fine detail some of the changes that have taken place in Ripley and Codnor over the last hundred years. Like many of the towns that grew up along the line of the coal seams that follow the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire border, Ripley and Codnor have seen changes in reflection of the changing demands for coal and its associate industries. Ripley was among the very first of these towns to see rapid industrial growth and this was largely due to the enterprises of the Butterley Company who, by the end of the eighteenth century, had established an engineering and coal-mining base in the area such that its legacy survives today, despite the loss of the local pits. The variety of engineering and other industries provided employment and some prosperity for an expanding population. These photographs show the industries, the streets and markets and some of the people who lived and worked here over the last century. These old scenes will Qring back powerful memories for some and introduce newcomers and a younger generation to a world of familyrun shops, trams and horse-drawn vehicles, coal-mining and even a town zoo!
