Artikelname: Cumbria's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: While the decline of Cumbria's railway network began long before Beeching, by the 1990s it began an amazing recovery with the reopening of many stations and the restoration of many freight services. Today, there is an upgraded West Coast main line and much improved, and accelerated services, but once upon a time there was a huge network which operated at a much more relaxed - and refined - pace. Featuring around 52 superb period photographs, this volume recalls the sights of that bygone era, including the long-lost Solway Viaduct, the Settle and Carlisle route, and the many rural stations that were once the lifeblood of Cumbrian communities.

Artikelname: Cumbria...Old Ulverston
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Ulverston includes many photographs of scenes that have changed beyond recognition, as well as period views of well-known landmarks such as Hoad Monument and the house where Sir John Barrow was born. The long-closed ironworks are illustrated, as is High Carley sanatorium, the Stanley Street workhouse and the burnt-out shell of the County Hotel, where the Coronation Hall was later built. Several pictures show the town's main commercial and shopping streets, with a 1906 view of the annual charity parade in the Gill and a picture of a First World War tank in the town centre. One of the most amazing pictures shows a bonfire of enormous proportions - nearly thirty feet wide and equally high - built to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. Delya Randall has included a number of family photographs in Old Ulverston, illustrating life in the town from the late Victorian period to the 1950s. Members of the Hornsby family and their friends are seen out and about in a horse-drawn carriage, on their bicycles, in a three-wheeled mini-car, and in the case of James Randall on his motorbike and driving his Wolseley car. The pictures lend period flavour to what is a varied and interesting collection of views of Ulverston and the locality.

Artikelname: Cumbria..Old Kirkby Lonsdale and the Rainbow Parish
Artikelbeschreibung: This collection of photographs illustrates many aspects of Kirkby Lonsdale's past, along with the neighbouring communities of Barbon, Casterton, Hutton Roof, Lupton and Mansergh. The busy streets of Kirkby, with its bustling markets and fairs, contrast with life on the area's big estates, many of whose mansions have since been demolished or radically altered. Underley Hall, Lunefield, The Biggins, Barbon Manor and Rigmaden Park are all included, while elsewhere the village schools at Mansergh and Lupton are featured, along with scenes of local industry at Hutton Roof quarries and Bainsbank Farm. The majority of pictures feature Kirkby Lonsdale itself, and dozens of well-known local faces appear between the book's pages, with names included wherever possible.
Artikelname: Old Alston
Artikelbeschreibung: Situated within the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty, Alston Moor is bordered by some of the highest, most remote fells of the Pennine Chain. It adjoins Northumberland to the North, Durham to the East and what was Westmorland to the South. The town of Alston was the most important settlement on the moor and was the major service centre for the lead industry of the north Pennine ore field.Detailed photographs of Chapel Terrace, the old police station, the unveiling of the war memorial in 1922 and the busy forge and blacksmith’s in 1910 give a flavour of life in slower times while the pictures of the Victoria Temperance Hotel remind us that despite what the media tell us, alcohol misuse is not necessarily a modern problem. Later railway photographs show dramatic pictures of a runaway locomotive which left the rails at station pool in 1920 and the derailment of the 2 p.m. to Haltwhistle on 22 March 1947; no passengers were reported to be injured but a newlywed couple were late for their honeymoon in Blackpool!

Artikelname: Old St Bees
Artikelbeschreibung: The coastal village of St Bees has a long and distinguished history, dating back to the legendary arrival of an Irish maiden called Bega in the area in the ninth century. Bega was later canonised and a Benedictine Priory established in her name in 1120. Other important events in the village's history include the founding of the famous St Bees School by the then Archbishop of Canterbury in 1583, and the setting up of the theological college in 1816. Whilst these early aspects of the St Bees story are covered in Donald Brownrigg's text, the accompanying illustrations date from the late nineteenth century onwards. Three gruesome but fascinating images show the 'St Bees Man', disinterred in anatomically near-perfect condition during an archaeological dig in 1981 after at least 500 years of burial, while other views illustrate more familiar aspects of the picturesque village, such as its attractive Main Street and former station. The Doloughan family's team of horses are seen busy at work on the beach collecting gravel and shingle, whilst a view of Finkle Street and a picture of wagons being loaded at the railway siding tell the story of Walkers' well-known grocery business. Other illustrations show St Bees School, the lighthouse, lifeboat, rolling stock at St Bees station, the old sea water swimming pool and the ore ship Izaro which ran aground at St Bees in 1907.
