Cumbria...Old Ulverston

Old Ulverston includes many photographs of scenes that have changed beyond recognition, as well as period views of well-known landmarks such as Hoad Monument and the house where Sir John Barrow was born. The long-closed ironworks are illustrated, as is High Carley sanatorium, the Stanley Street workhouse and the burnt-out shell of the County Hotel, where the Coronation Hall was later built. Several pictures show the town's main commercial and shopping streets, with a 1906 view of the annual charity parade in the Gill and a picture of a First World War tank in the town centre. One of the most amazing pictures shows a bonfire of enormous proportions - nearly thirty feet wide and equally high - built to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee. Delya Randall has included a number of family photographs in Old Ulverston, illustrating life in the town from the late Victorian period to the 1950s. Members of the Hornsby family and their friends are seen out and about in a horse-drawn carriage, on their bicycles, in a three-wheeled mini-car, and in the case of James Randall on his motorbike and driving his Wolseley car. The pictures lend period flavour to what is a varied and interesting collection of views of Ulverston and the locality.
