Artikelname: A Guide to Welsh Place Names
Artikelbeschreibung: The great majority of Welsh place-names, unlike English ones, make very good sense in thier present-day forms provided, of course, that you know something about Welsh itselfl This book is specifically designed to reduce the language problem to a minimum. Drawing on some 500 place-name examples, the author gives their meanings and analyses their different constructions in a simple and concise way; he also sketches in the linguistic and historical background to Welsh names, as well as pin-pointing some of the varied human interests that lie behind them (nor are Brythonic-based names in England overlooked). Although primarily a guide, the book will - ideally - assist readers to find their own way around the Welsh place-name field.

Why are there huge churches in tiny hamlets? Where in Wales is a 9-acre village churchyard? Where are the steps in a churchyard wall to provide an easy route from the church to the tavern? These are a few of the strange questions answered in this book. Cock-fighting and Celtic crosses; dancing and sun-dials; prehistoric sites and the burial grounds of Welsh princes; games and lych gates; potent drinks and strange epitaphs - these are a few of the interesting things drawn to our attention. Artikelname: Life in the Victorian Brickyards of Flintshire and Denbighshire
Artikelbeschreibung: Together with its sister industry in the colliery sector, the development of the brickworks throughout the Flintshire and Denbighshire of the Victorian era formed the commercial foundations upon which the district's modern-day prosperities have subsequently been founded. Very few people today know just how extensive the Brick and Terracotta Works became during this period; creating some of the most prestigious and successful clayware manufactories to be found anywhere within the British Isles. But the history of the brickworks is also one of the men who toiled at the kilns and in the clayholes , and their story is as colourful as any other of the period. Using newspaper stories and documents from those times, this book brings to life part of their story and as much attempts to entertain as well as to educate. The Victorian era witnessed the brickworks heydays, and this book therefore concentrates primarily upon those times, but also investigates the history of the Industry's decline and eventual demise in the 20th century.

Large heavy volume and P&P costs quoted reflect this fact.

Artikelname: Lovespoons,Traditional Spoon Carving in Wales
Artikelbeschreibung: By now, the lovespoon has become one of the representative images of Wales, a unique emblem of the culture. There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. To tell the story of the lovespoon, this book starts with its humble older sister, the domestic spoon. Long before knives and forks were used for eating, and long before the availability of metal spoons, carved wooden spoons were in wide use, and their manufacture was a major occupation in the Welsh countryside. The craft of domestic spoonmaking developed into that of the lovespoon, and the author details the different styles that emerged, explains some of the symbolism of the designs, describes the woodworking craft from start to finish, and traces the growth, decline and rebirth of this uniquely Welsh craft tradition. Also included is a Gazetteer of Spooncarvers workshops worth a visit.

Artikelname: The Mould Tragedy of 1869
Artikelbeschreibung: The Mold Riot of June 1869, resulting in the death of four people altered the way that the British Army dealt with public insurrection thereafter. Jenny and Mike Griffiths seek to show how local colliers, who were justly defending their rights, were badly treated and condemned by the local ruling aristocracy, who as Magistrates were openly biased against the local colliers. The subsequent inquest into the four dead, shot by the army, was equally biased against the colliers. One of those shot, Margaret Younghusband 19 years, from Chester was just an innocent bystander. But it was her death above all others that was the catalyst for change in Army procedure and the advent of many local constabularies. Much of the information published in this book has never before been published. The book highlights a very important event in Welsh history that is sadly not given sufficient publicity in modern society. The colliers may have gone but the stories remain.

Artikelname: The Thirsty Dragon;Welsh Brewing and Distilling
Artikelbeschreibung: Wales and beer have always enjoyed a love-hate relationship. To many of our bards it was their life-blood, but during the Great War, Lloyd George announced that Wales had three enemies: the Germans, the Austrians, and strong drink. Of the three, strong drink was the worst. The chapel patriarchs of the temperance movement agreed. Yet it was a minister of religion who founded the Buckley brewing dynasty, and there is good reason to believe that the man who taught Arthur Guinness to brew was a Welsh priest. Today, only two major brewers remain in Wales, but our brewing heritage lives on, because when the Saxons invaded our land they also stole our beer, At least thcy showed good taste. Welsh Ale was recognised throughout the British Isles as being the best. This book traces the history of brewing in Wales and also touches on the making of mead, cider and whisky. So, iechyd da! Have a good read.

Artikelname: Trams Beside the Seaside: The Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Light Railway
Artikelbeschreibung: Once, few major towns and cities in Britain were without a tramway system, and the sight of a tram in the street was something people took for granted. Aging tramcars and track, changing patterns of public transport, war damage, and increasing road congestion had, by the early 1950s however, put paid to that sight in decisive fashion. By 1955 only a handful of systems lingered on, and for a generation of children who had never seen - never mind ridden -a tramcar before, a holiday in Llandudno provided a magical experience, for here one of the last British tramways still operated, with open-top doubledeckers trundling along the coast to Colwyn Bay and back. This is the story of that fondly-remembered tramway: how it came into being, how it lived and how it died.
