Artikelname: Old Giffnock
Artikelbeschreibung: When the railway reached it in 1864, Giffnock was still a rural village with some local industry and remained so for quite some time afterwards. Coal was mined and sandstone and limestone were quarried locally, and these industries benefited from the new rail connection. More importantly, however, the railway made commuting into Glasgow feasible, and it was the growth of Giffnock as a commuter suburb from the late nineteenth century onwards that led to the emergence of the modern residential district of today. Anna Blair has included a wide variety of images in this book, covering many aspects of the social, spiritual and cultural growth of Giffnock over the past 100 years. Two pictures show the very centre of Giffnock before streets of houses were laid out on what were then farm fields; other views focus on some of the big houses in the vicinity and their fate. Eastwood Toll is shown prior to its major realignment, and elsewhere familiar locations such as Kilmarnock Road are seen prior to widening and in the days of the trams.
Artikelname: Old Gourock
Artikelbeschreibung: Cragburn Pavilion, venue for the town's weekly dances, the Cloch lighthouse and Gourock's famous open-air pool (one of only a handful left in the UK) are some of the sights featured in this book. The pier and station are shown in their heyday, with steamers alongside and wagons of coal standing by to refuel them. The Bay Hotel looks modern and stylish in photographs that were taken when it was newly-built, but latterly it had become a shabby eyesore, and was recently demolished. Other pictures cover all Gourock's major streets and landmarks, along with a few less familiar ones, such as the town's old copper mine.
Artikelname: Old Greenock
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Greenock features a stunning collection of 170 photographs illustrating many aspects of the town's historic past. There are fascinating glimpses of many areas where overcrowding in the early twentieth century led to living conditions that would be unimaginable today. These neighbourhoods were swept away during a variety of redevelopments, and are just one example of how this historic town has changed during its relatively short existence. Many well-remembered local businesses such as Shannons and Mackays are also featured, along with sobering images of the aftermath of the Blitz and pictures of Greenock's legendary docks and shipbuilding heritage. Joy Monteith has written enlightening captions to accompany the pictures, making this book a must for anyone who has any connection with Greenock past or present.

Artikelname: Old Port Glasgow
Artikelbeschreibung: Before the Clyde was deepened at Glasgow in the late eighteenth century, large trading vessels could not sail up it as far as the city, and Port Glasgow was created in the 1660s as a deep water port for the city, facilitating its trade with the New World. The port and its accompanying village grew substantially, and in 1775 absorbed the neighbouring fishing village of Newark. By this stage, however, trade was shifting gradually eastwards to Glasgow as the Clyde was deepened. Fortunately Port Glasgow began to diversify its economy, with shipbuilding commencing about this time. Along with sail- and rope-making, shipbuilding became a key source of employment in the town, and these industries supported it well into the twentieth century. Having expanded dramatically during its boom years, the Port Glasgow of the last century found itself with an unenviable amount of cramped and inadequate housing. This problem was addressed throughout the century, with new developments replacing many of the crowded and crumbling tenements and closes. During the same period the harbour - the original reason for the town's establishment - was filled in too. Joy Monteith's text provides a fascinating background to the wide-ranging collection of pictures in this book, which illustrate the key aspects of Port Glasgow's growth and redevelopment from the late Victorian period up to 1970.
Artikelname: Old Renfrew
Artikelbeschreibung: Contains photographs of three different generations of the famous Renfrew ferry, as well as views of other traffic on the Clyde, including the steamer Isle of Arran. Pictures of the area around the town hall show it before and after the one- and two-storey thatched buildings were demolished and replaced by substantial sandstone tenements. There are also some fantastic views of the very futuristic Renfrew Airport building dating from the 1950s.
Artikelname: Old Uplawmoor
Artikelbeschreibung: Historic Uplawmoor, associated for centuries with the Barony of Caldwell and the Mure family, is still a vibrant community today, although now bereft of many of the services once to be found there. The pictures in this book highlight the village's railway history (it once had two stations) and illustrate one of the buses that used to serve it. Farming has always been of great importance locally, and there are photographs of haymaking, a ploughman and his horses, a milkmaid with an Ayrshire cow, and numerous local farms. Members of the community generously lent photographs for the book, and many local families are featured, with individuals named wherever possible. There are also pictures of Miss Allan, donor of the Glen, Jean Dale's shop, the Mure Hall, Uplawmoor Hotel, curling on Loch Libo, the golf and tennis clubs and the local Home Guard.

Among its varied contents are pictures of a circus elephant, the Bobby Barr Dancers, George Dobie's tobacco works, the ubiquitous Paisley Rocketeers and many more delightful and quirky human interest photos of Buddies from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.
Artikelname: Renfrewshire's Last Days of Steam
Artikelbeschreibung: The latest in W.A.C. Smith's series deals with Renfrewshire, a county where steam on land and steam at sea were closely linked. The pictures and text are all by the author and locations featured include Renfrew, Greenock, Paisley, Howwood, Bridge of Weir, Port Glasgow and every other town in the area which either still has a railway station, or at least fond memories of one.
Artikelname: Wheels Around Inverclyde

Horse-drawn trams at Ashton, a Port Glasgow Gas Department steam waggon, Greenock Co-op's fleet of Rolls Royce hearses, and lorries carrying ropes from Gourock Ropeworks are some of the subjects featured. The area's local bus companies are illustrated before they were swallowed up by big national concerns, and there are two pictures of steam trains passing through Kilmacolm station (now closed). Paddle wheels feature too, as do plenty of street scenes of the towns included, making this of interest to transport fans and Inverclyde locals alike.
Artikelname: Wheels Around Paisley
Artikelbeschreibung: In this book Robert Grieves covers his home town of Paisley, drawing on pictures from his extensive archive. Like the other titles in the series, this is a must for the general transport enthusiast. It's packed with fantastic pictures of buses, trains, cars, delivery vans, horse buses and other forms of wheeled vehicles, including even prams (they've got wheels too). However, it should be stressed that Wheels Around Paisley will also appeal to general readers with a wider interest in Paisley itself. As usual Robert has taken pains to highlight local landmarks, shops and businesses, and many pictures shed as much light on the Paisley of the past as they do on wheeled subjects.
Artikelname: Wheels Around Renfrewshire
Artikelbeschreibung: Prior to regionalisation in 1975, the county of Renfrewshire stretched north of the Clyde to include Yoker and parts of Scotstoun, while also reaching as far west as Gourock. Complementing Wheels Around Paisley, this book includes dozens of photographs illustrating numerous aspects of the county's transport past. The much-loved Renfrew Ferry features prominently, as do the trams and buses that connected with it. Elsewhere there are views of such diverse subjects as the scrapyard at Linwood Toll, a horse-drawn water cart in Barrhead, Dugald Semple's caravan at Bridge of Weir, and an early Castlebank Laundry lorry made by Albion Motors of Scotstoun. Classic photos of Renfrew Airport have been included as planes have wheels too! Robert Grieves' captions are detailed and illuminating, providing historical background that will interest general readers as well as the transport fraternity. Locations illustrated include: Port Glasgow, Brookfield, Kilbarchan, Greenock, Newton Mearns, Thornliebank, Paisley, Renfrew, Bishopton and Bridge of Weir.
