Artikelname: Around Crieff and Strathearn
Artikelbeschreibung: Strathearn, the valley of the River Earn, lies strategically between the Highlands and Lowlands and its unique position as the gateway between the two has seen its involvement in many turbulent clashes in Scotland's past. Crieff the 'capital of Strathearn' - was once a cattle town where drovers traded their beasts at the annual Michaelmas 'Tryst'. It later became the centre of a vibrant weaving industry for nearly a century. Rob Roy, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Picts and the Romans all passed this way at one time. Colin Mayall, a local historian and well-known resident of Crieff, has used over 200 archive images to capture much of the history of this area, including images of railways, great houses and buildings - many long since gone - and the people of Strathearn at work on the farm, going about their daily tasks or at leisure.

Artikelname: Bygone Perth
Artikelbeschreibung: Guthrie Hutton's second book on Perth for Stenlake features almost 180 archive photographs, accompanied by captions telling the story of the city's growth and development. There are pictures of well-known local businesses, life on and around the River Tay, sports being played on the Inches and a brief history of the dyeing industry in Perth. Trams ? both horse-drawn and electric ? are illustrated along with the city's train station and rolling stock in the days of steam locomotives. Devastating fires at Arthur Bell's bond and Peter Campbell's dyeworks are included, as are photographs of Perth's public fire brigade and Pullar's private one in the days when their engines were still pulled by horses. Craigie, Friarton, Craigend, Cherrybank, Quarrymill, Bridgend, Kinnoull, Corsiehill and Barnhill are featured too.

Artikelname: Bygone Scone
Artikelbeschreibung: Scone occupies a special place in Scottish History as the location where Scottish monarchs were crowned and its association with the famous ‘Stone of Destiny’. However, these links do tend to overshadow the rest of Scone’s history such as the moving of the original village to a site two miles east – one of the most dramatic and complete new town developments, and it took place in the early 1800s! This book gives the full story of Scone and features over fifty photographs from the early years of the twentieth century.

Artikelname: More Old Blairgowrie and Rattray
Artikelbeschreibung: Due to popular demand Maurice Fleming has compiled this follow-up to his very popular - and three-times reprinted - Old Blairgowrie and Rattray, and it's packed with even more historically unusual images than the first book. Among the many subjects are street-cleaning in the late 1800s, an aerial view of Blairgowrie from 1939, steam tractors and berry pickers at Essendy, the celebrations for King George V's Silver Jubilee in 1935, the record-breaking flood on the River Ericht in 1910, King Edward VII's visit of 1908, a gypsy with his dancing bear in the early 1900s, a 1930s Scout camp at Easter Bleaton, and Hugh Grant and his Co-op delivery van in the 1930s. The sixty-one images also include a variety of fascinating street scenes showing many of the town's traders from decades gone by - Fleming's department store, Keillor's Restaurant, J & A Reid's baker's shop, Alex Petrie's grocer's shop, Gun's Hotel, the Commercial Bank of Scotland and Alex Steven's barber's shop are just some - while outlying locations such as Muirton of Ardblair, the Devil's Elbow, Spittal of Glenshee and the Heughs of Mause are also covered.

Artikelname: Old Auchterarder, Blackford and Braco
Artikelbeschreibung: Auchterarder has been with us since 1227 and Blackford is similarly ancient. Braco, however, came much later as it was developed in 1815 by the local landowner. The full history of these communities is recounted here, while the more recent years of the twentieth century are recalled by the fifty-three period photographs, featuring, among other things, Auchterarder's 'Coal Bore' and Henderson's Garage and roadside pump on High Street, the mills of Abbey Road, Blackford's railway station, the first Gleneagles House, and the early years of the world-famous hotel.

Artikelname: Old Blairgowrie and Rattray
Artikelbeschreibung: This excellent collection of photographs features several of Blairgowrie's former residents and worthies. There's a magnificent picture of the interior of Robertson's grocer's shop along with its staff, John Maclachlan the town crier, members of the bowling club photographed after a snowstorm in 1908, and historic line-ups of the local cricket and football teams. Essendy fruit farm and a group of fruit pickers, Kinclaven ferry, Rattray High Street and Muirtown of Ardblair are among many other pictures featured.

Artikelname: Old Callander and the Trossachs
Artikelbeschreibung: Although the Victorians are widely credited with popularising the Trossachs as a tourist destination, the area was being appreciated for its natural beauty as far back as the reign of King George III. Wordsworth and Coleridge visited in 1803 and a decade later the novels and poetry of Sir Walter Scott led to a huge increase of visitors. In 1820 a new hotel was built in Callander, ten years later Thomas Cook started bringing tourist parties using ferries to Inversnaid, the railway to Callander opened in 1858, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited in 1863 and, finally, Queen Victoria herself came in 1869 ? all events which helped to secure the area?s reputation as one of the most popular beauty spots in Britain. This detailed history is accompanied by 57 superb photographs dating from the late nineteenth century through to the 1960s, and among the many long-gone sights featured are cattle being herded down Callander?s Main Street, steam engines at Callander and Aberfoyle stations, the opulent Callander Hydropathic, vintage jalopies at the Brig o? Turk Tearoom, and horse coaches at Loch Katrine and Stronachlachar.

Artikelname: Old Comrie, Upper Strathearn and Balquhidder
Artikelbeschreibung: Over 50 superb period photographs are featured in this history of the region around Comrie. Many fascinating, and long-gone, subjects are included - the old stone bridge at Comrie, which was replaced by the current one in 1905; the rope ferry which operated briefly while the new bridge was being built; Dunira House, home in the 1800s to Viscount Melville, the 'Uncrowned King of Scotland'; the railway stations at Comrie, St Fillans, Glenoglehead, Lochearnhead, Balquhidder, Kingshouse, and Strathyre; the very grand Lochearnhead Hotel; the steamer Queen of Loch Earn plying its trade; and the 'camping coaches' at Strathyre - as well as a wealth of local scenes from the era before mass motorcar tourism. Apart from Comrie and Balquhidder, other locations featured are St Fillans, Loch Earn, Lochearnhead, Glenoglehead and Strathyre.

Artikelname: Old Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy
Artikelbeschreibung: The scope of this book comprises three very different areas. The first part, from the Lix Toll near the foot of the northbound descent from Glenoglehead, goes westwards through Glen Dochart to Crianlarich. In contrast to the lochs and woodlands of Glen Dochart, the second part covers the five miles northwards to Tyndrum. The third section heads north through Bridge of Orchy. The area received a boost through the arrival of the railways in the late nineteenth century and again as cars and motor coaches penetrated the area in ever-increasing numbers in the 1920s and 30s. This collection of photos includes sleepy Edwardian views of Tyndrum and Crianlarich as they used to be and more recognisable views of the same places in the 1920s. Also included are pictures of the mine at Tyndrum and the West Highland Railway.

Artikelname: Old Crieff
Artikelbeschreibung: The 'Gateway to the Highlands', the ancient town of Crieff's beautiful location has always ensured that it has never had to rely on heavy industry for survival, relying instead on weaving, agriculture and the constant stream of tourists who have been coming since the railway opened in the 1850s. This history of the town, containing fifty-four period photographs, tells the full story of the town, from the thirteenth century through to the present day, and the photographs feature many a bygone scene: the proclamation of Edward VIII's accession to the throne in 1936; a game on the giant draughts board in James Square; a delivery to Lipton's grocer on High Street; a performance of the Crieff Comedy Company; trains coming and going at the railway station (which closed in 1964). Several pictures also show life at the Hydro in all its Edwardian splendour and the events of the Crieff Highland Games; more poignantly, life at Monzie Camp in the years just before the First World War is also explored.

Artikelname: Old Dunblane
Artikelbeschreibung: Although this book is mainly about old Dunblane (pages 1 - 30), delightful Ashfield gets three pages, Kinbuck eleven and Sheriffmuir (the inn and that stone) two. Amongst the Dunblane pictures are the High Street (several), the 1908 Royal Visit, Sinclair Street, the station, the 'Faery' Bridge, Springbank Mill, Laighills Park playground, Chucky Row, Braeport, Fourways junction & the Restaurant, the golf club, Queen Victoria School and a few more besides. Ashfield Mill dominates one of the pictures of that village and the other two date from 1928 and show Allanview and the houses in the square and 'The Cottages' and 'The Steading'. For a place the size of nothing I am amazed that we tracked down eleven pages worth of old photos. These include River Allan and 'The Cottage', the main street in 1928, the post office in 1928 , Mill Cottages, Allanbank Road, The old Kinbuck Spinning Company Mill, the new council houses in 1928, Kinbuck Station, Orwell House in its heyday as a convalescent home and finally Cromlix House and estate. If you live locally you may be able to purchase the book from Ashfield Village Hall, at Well Read in Dunblane or in the bookshops in Stirling. Otherwise availability in the shops is restricted to those few shops further afield who carry most of our Scottish range, such as William Whitie in Peebles

Artikelname: Old Killin, Kenmore and Loch Tay
Artikelbeschreibung: For long the area of influence for the Campbells of Breadalbane, the area around Loch Tay was subject to their improvements to the land and also their clearance of many people from the area in the nineteenth century. However, the family were largely responsible for the arrival of the railway and the development of many local industries, as well as the provision of housing, churches, hostelries and even the passenger ships that once steamed around the loch. Among the bygone sights featured in this comprehensive history, are the steamships Queen of the Lake and Lady of the Lake, the Killin Hotel before its fire in the 1930s, and Taymouth Castle in its magnificent heyday. Other communities featured include Lawers, Acharn, Ardeonaig, Fearnan, Ardtalnaig, Glen Lochay and Glen Dochart.

Artikelname: Old Kinross-shire
Artikelbeschreibung:

The small and largely agricultural county of Kinross-shire has always enjoyed good communication links, and its market towns of Kinross and Milnathort provided coaching inns on the main Queensferry to Perth road in the days of the stagecoaches. The county has a distinguished architectural heritage, benefiting from the patronage of the Adam family who owned Blaircrambeth (later Blairadam) Estate, while also boasting both Loch Leven Castle and the impressive Kinross House, the latter designed by Sir William Bruce. As well as the two main towns, other locations illustrated include: Kinross Junction Station, Balado, Balgedie, Easter Balgedie, Kinnesswood, Scotlandwell, Blairadam Station, Cleish, Blairingone, Powmill, Rumbling Bridge (and Station), Crook of Devon, Carnbo, Tillyrie and Middleton

Artikelname: Old Pitlochry, Strathtummel and Rannoch
Artikelbeschreibung: This collection of over fifty photographs, accompanied by a detailed history, captures the town and the surrounding area in the late-Victorian & Edwardian era. It was Queen Victoria's visit and her interest in the area which made Pitllochry fashionable for tourism. Visitor numbers increased dramatically after the arrival of the railway in the 1860s and the town we know today is basically a Victorian creation.

Artikelname: Wheels Around Perth
Artikelbeschreibung: This book will delight both transport enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in the history of Perth. Not only are there dozens of excellent transport photographs, but many of these include aspects of the city that have long since vanished. There are plenty of pictures of Perth's erstwhile trams, while horse-drawn traffic, locomotives, a paddle steamer, bicycles, cars, buses and delivery vehicles are illustrated going about their daily business on the city's streets. Perth's important history as a rail hub is well covered, while more unusual subjects include a fair on the South Inch and a cricket match on the North Inch (you'll need to read the book to discover the 'wheels' connection!).
