Old Hamilton

This fantastic collection of pictures represents every aspect of Hamilton life in the earlier years of the last century. As well as all the things you'd expect, there are some curiosities, such as the magnificent terraced Barncluith Gardens (now sadly overgrown), pictures of lavish interiors at Hamilton Palace and the tragic story of the Duke of Hamilton's priceless sofas, which ended up in an ice-cream parlour and then in a skip. The postcard of Leith docks hasn't been put in by accident - it advertises a Hamilton shopkeeper's own-brand explosive which was bought by miners and used for blasting-work in pits. Hamilton Barracks, Cadzow Bridge, Peacock Cross, the old town, Burnbank Cross, Ferniegair and Quarter are among the many other locations featured.
