Old Douglas and Coalburn
A detailed and extremely readable look at the histories of these two villages, written by local expert James Hamilton, who has also included pictures of the smaller neighbouring communities of Douglas Water, Rigside and Glespin in his book. As well as all the landmarks you'd expect (such as Douglas Castle, which was demolished in 1938), there's an awful lot of social history here too, with a lovely picture of washday at Douglas Water in the 1930s, along with the St Bride's Quoiting Club, and Coalburn post office with two of James Adam's horse and carriage teams outside. The area's former mining industry is covered extensively, along with pictures and captions describing less well-remembered aspects of local history, such as the yeomanry camps at Douglas.
