Artikelname: Biggar Since the War
Artikelbeschreibung: This collection of photographs recalls many aspects of the historic town of Biggar in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Included are the last passenger train to leave the station (on 3 June 1950), one of J. A. Cuthbertson's Water Buffalo all-terrain vehicles, the old Biggar telephone exchange and Queen Elizabeth II's brief visit in 1956. Well-loved landmarks such as Cadger's Brig and views of the High Street are included too, along with groups including Biggar Cycling Club, a local curling team, Biggar Dramatic Club and the Biggar British Legion Pipe Band. Dozens of local faces appear in the book, and wherever possible names have been included in the text. The Hogmanay bonfire, scenes from past Gala Days and pictures of events held for the town's quincentennial celebrations all feature too.
Artikelname: Bygone Bellshill
Artikelbeschreibung: The schools, factories, streets and shops of Bellshill and Mossend are shown here in the first half of the nineteenth century. There's a picture of the town's firemen posing on what was probably a state-of-the-art fire engine when the photo was taken in 1912, and several shots of vehicles built by Archibald Scott's garage, including an ice-cream van supplied to the far-flung Antigua Dairy Co. The local Co-op's shop and headquarters is featured, along with a picture of one of their popular annual gala days. Also included are a group of pupils from Bellshill Public School, T. M. Anderson's combined newsagent's and hairdresser's, vintage views of the Cross, and much more.
Artikelname: Central SMT - The First 40 Years
Artikelbeschreibung: Central SMT formed a key part of Scotland's transport scene for half a century, providing the heavily industrialised areas of Clydeside and Lanarkshire with an extensive network of bus services that ensured it became a household name. Robert Grieves traces Central's origins and growth, along with the histories of the many smaller operators that it absorbed during its rapid expansion. Detailed captions accompany a collection of over 200 photographs, including a number of early colour shots. Many well-known Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire locations form the backdrops of pictures of Central SMT buses plying their routes, bringing back memories for all those who travelled on Central's distinctive red buses. Coverage finishes in 1981 when bus conductors finally gave way to one-man operation.
Artikelname: Lanarkshire's Last Days of Steam
Artikelbeschreibung: Bill Smith, besides being a first-rate person and immensely modest, must rank as one of the best railway photographers of the post-war era. This book is as much a testament to his technical and compositional skills as to his foresight in recording so much during the great closure period and the last days of steam. This book really is a must for the railway enthusiast.
Artikelname: Lanarkshire's Legendary Cinemas
Artikelbeschreibung: Cinemas in seventeen Lanarkshire towns are featured, ranging from glorified sheds (such as the Ritz in Lesmahagow) to art deco palaces and architectural flights of fantasy like the Windsor in Carluke. Some of these popular childhood haunts have survived (often as bingo halls), but many have been demolished. Pictures of the interiors reveal that cutting-edge styling often continued beyond the facade of these remarkable buildings.
Artikelname: Lanarkshire's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: Old B&W pictures of lost Lanarkshire stations and historic rolling stock accompany statistics detailing when lines and stations closed. The book features many excellent photographs by W.A.C. Smith, whose extensive archive features prominently in all our Scottish railway books.
Artikelname: Lanarkshire's Mining Legacy
Artikelbeschreibung: The combination of a fantastic collection of photographs and Guthrie Hutton's carefully researched captions have made Lanarkshire's Mining Legacy a resounding hit. As in his other mining works for Stenlake Publishing, the material covers a relatively wide spectrum, with many animated pictures showing the various aspects of life both down the pit and at home in Lanarkshire's mining communities. Some of the many locations featured, along with their mining connections, are: Garthamlock, Queenslie, Chapelhall, Longriggend, Ardenrigg mine, Barrachnie, Baillieston, Bredisholm Nos. 3 & 4, Viewpark colliery, Dalzell pit, The Camp colliery, Brachnal mine, Overtown, Newmains, Kingshill Nos. 1 & 2, Stane colliery, Dewshill pit, Hassockrigg pit, Muirhead pit, Wilsontown, Haywood, Tarbrax, Govan colliery, Blantyreferme colliery, Bardykes colliery, Priory colliery, Blantyre, Hamilton Palace, Eddlewood, Cadzow, Ferniegair colliery, Quarter, Canderrigg Nos. 4 & 5, Broomfield, Bellfield Pit, Auchlochan, Ponfeigh, Glentaggart mine, Leadhills, Cadder, Mavis Valley, Auchengeich, Glenboig, Bedlay and Cardowan.
Artikelname: Old Airdrie
Artikelbeschreibung: Central Airdrie is well-represented here with Stirling Street, Graham Street and South Bridge Street featured together with some interesting streets a bit further out. Airdrie FC in pre-administration days (who said a diamond is forever?) feature on two pages and railway buffs will enjoy the Shanks & McEwan pug. Amongst the areas on the outskirts of Airdrie that have been included are Rawyards, Clarkston and Drumgelloch. There are some great tram photos both in town and near the car terminus, and a wonderful picture of Airdrie's sewage works in 1935. My personal favourite is of the villa Arranview, designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. Overall, Old Airdrie is a good mix of town centre and other subjects.
Artikelname: Old Airdrie Villages
Artikelbeschreibung: Calderbank, Caldercruix, Chapelhall, Glenmavis, Greengairs, Longriggend and Plains are all featured in this book. It includes the paper mill at Caldercruix, Verecchia's shop in Calderbank, long-demolished miners' rows in Chapelhall, Longriggend when it was a thriving village and John Carmichael's Glenmavis bus.
Artikelname: Old Biggar
Artikelbeschreibung: Biggar is the quintessential picturesque country town, and Ann Matheson's book contains a fantastic selection of pictures portraying its inhabitants at work and play. From a shot of Gilbert Rae's ironmonger's, its window festooned with every sort of pot, pan and jug imaginable, to a flock of sheep being ushered up the High Street, it's all here. Albion Motors are represented, along with several pictures of wartime charity collections, weavers' cottages at Westraw, a curling match on Biggar Pond, and much more.
Artikelname: Old Blackwood and Kirkmuirhill
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Blackwood and Kirkmuirhill takes in Auchenheath, Boghead, Tillietudlum and Draffan, in addition to the villages mentioned in the title. It offers a good selection of quality period photographs which give a taste of early twentieth century life in the district. These range from street scenes, views of local miners and the railway station, to pictures of Kirkmuirhill Juniors, Blackwood House and local school photographs. There is also a photograph of a 'creeling', an old marriage custom.
Artikelname: Old Blantyre
Artikelbeschreibung: Photographs of the old Blantyre Mills show David Livingstone's workplace before he left Scotland for a new life in Africa as a missionary. Former landmarks in High and Low Blantyre include the old Picture House and Broadway cinemas, High Blantyre station and the tenements and shops that included the Station Cafe. There are long-lost mansions such as Millheugh House, and two interesting pictures of the nearby hamlet of Auchentibber - one showing its amazing statue garden and the other the local quoiting club.
Artikelname: Old Bothwell
Artikelbeschreibung: It's hard to imagine the well-to-do Bothwell of today having anything to do with mining, but Rhona Wilson shows that it did. There are several pictures of Castle Pit, which was situated very centrally in the village, along with the tenements that were built to house incoming miners. Life at nearby Bothwellhaugh, the village serving Hamilton Palace Colliery, is shown in a dozen pictures portraying this mining community before its relics were buried under the landscaping of Strathclyde Country Park. As well as all this gritty industry, there are pictures of a more familiar Bothwell, featuring neat streets with smart shops and well-dressed residents. Bothwell Castle, the old railway viaduct and the former convent are among many other local landmarks in the book.
Artikelname: Old Cambuslang
Artikelbeschreibung: Cows being herded along Greenlees Road, a line-up of Cambuslang Rangers FC, the old Toll Pit in Hamilton Road and the now-demolished Clyde's Mill power station are some of the places featured in Old Cambuslang. There are many excellent pictures of Main Street prior to its redevelopment in the 1960s, showing it bustling with life in a way that has completely been lost since the demolition of one side of it and its widening to a dual carriageway. Halfway, Hallside and Newton are included too.
Artikelname: Old Carnwath
Artikelbeschreibung: There's more to Carnwath than meets the eye, as Ann Matheson illustrates in this varied collection of photographs. Although at first glance modern Carnwath may seem a quiet, even perhaps boring place, the pictures and accompanying captions of Old Carnwath describe a vibrant community with many local businesses, a lively cultural scene and important historic connections. Lost landmarks such as the tolbooth are seen alongside familiar buildings like the Wee Bush Inn and St Mary's Aisle. The picturesque Lampits ferry features as a former important transport connection, as do a number of the area's lost railway stations. Also included are the nearby settlements of Braehead, Dolphinton, Dunsyre, Elsrickle, Kaimend, Libberton, Newbigging, and Walston.
Artikelname: Old Coatbridge
Artikelbeschreibung: This book begins with a look at Coatbridge's famous ironworks, which gave the impetus for the town's development, but which had all closed by the late 1960s. Pictures of Bank Street show it before wholesale demolition took place and when landmarks such as the Coatbridge Cinema were still standing. There are also lots of interesting views of the Cross and Main Street, where great changes have taken place too. Trams and buses feature prominently, and pictures of the Coatbridge tram depot, plus one of John Carmichael's 'Highland' buses outside the Albion Rovers Stadium, are included. There are four photos of Whifflet, and a rare picture of the old village of Rosehall. Drumpellier House and the Coatbridge Co-op HQ in Muiryhall Street are among other well-known landmarks featured.
Artikelname: Old Coatbridge Villages
Artikelbeschreibung: Most of the villages in the vicinity of Coatbridge grew up during the industrial boom of the nineteenth century, when coal, ironstone and fireclay began to be mined on a large scale and a comprehensive transport network developed. Annathill's miners' rows have long gone, but it is shown in the book as a self-sufficient village with all manner of amenities. Coatdyke was once separate from Coatbridge and had its own identity and landmarks such as the Stewart Institute. Many of Glenboig's buildings were victims of the village's industrial success - mining of fireclay left a legacy of subsidence and demolition. Evocative photos of Bargeddie, Gartcosh, Mollinsburn and Condorrat are all included too, along with a view of the Gartloch Distillery at Chryston and a billhead from one of the fireclay works at Garnkirk.
Artikelname: Old Douglas and Coalburn
Artikelbeschreibung: A detailed and extremely readable look at the histories of these two villages, written by local expert James Hamilton, who has also included pictures of the smaller neighbouring communities of Douglas Water, Rigside and Glespin in his book. As well as all the landmarks you'd expect (such as Douglas Castle, which was demolished in 1938), there's an awful lot of social history here too, with a lovely picture of washday at Douglas Water in the 1930s, along with the St Bride's Quoiting Club, and Coalburn post office with two of James Adam's horse and carriage teams outside. The area's former mining industry is covered extensively, along with pictures and captions describing less well-remembered aspects of local history, such as the yeomanry camps at Douglas.
Artikelname: Old East Kilbride
Artikelbeschreibung: Not surprisingly, most of the pictures in Old East Kilbride show the village, rather than the new town, although there are some classic 1960s shots of the brand spanking new shopping centre. Amongst the village pictures are some recognisable landmarks, such as the 'Monty' pub, but probably more interesting are the many buildings that have been swept away, including Kate Dalrymple's picturesque house in Maxwell Street, the village smithy and a brewery that once operated in Main Street.
Artikelname: Old Forth
Artikelbeschreibung: Forth and the surrounding area was once at the forefront of Scotland's industrial revolution and this new history recalls the 175 years of mining and ironworking which went on there. Compiled and written by the Forth & District Initiative Group, a team of local people dedicated to revitalising the area and preserving its heritage, the book also contains pages on Wilsontown, Climpy, Braehead, Haywood, Auchengray, Woolfords and Tarbrax.
Artikelname: Old Hamilton
Artikelbeschreibung: This fantastic collection of pictures represents every aspect of Hamilton life in the earlier years of the last century. As well as all the things you'd expect, there are some curiosities, such as the magnificent terraced Barncluith Gardens (now sadly overgrown), pictures of lavish interiors at Hamilton Palace and the tragic story of the Duke of Hamilton's priceless sofas, which ended up in an ice-cream parlour and then in a skip. The postcard of Leith docks hasn't been put in by accident - it advertises a Hamilton shopkeeper's own-brand explosive which was bought by miners and used for blasting-work in pits. Hamilton Barracks, Cadzow Bridge, Peacock Cross, the old town, Burnbank Cross, Ferniegair and Quarter are among the many other locations featured.
Artikelname: Old Harthill
Artikelbeschreibung: Pictures of Harthill's Main Street and the shops and businesses that lined it during the early decades of the twentieth century form the core of this book, which also includes views of Eastfield, Greenrigg, West Benhar and Salsburgh. McKee's grocers, the Athletic Bar, the West Benhar Co-operative Society's shop in Harthill and the West End Bar are all illustrated, along with Harthill Public School and miners' rows in West Benhar. Paxtane farm is included, as is a picture of the Pack Stone after which it was named. A photograph of Peden's Stone is accompanied by the story of the Covenanters who once held outdoor church services at this spot.
Artikelname: Old Larkhall
Artikelbeschreibung: If you're from Larkhall, then there's probably a picture of one of your relatives in our new book. There's the local Boys Brigade and Girls Guildry, photos of more than half a dozen local sporting groups, including Royal Albert football team and Birkenshaw Quoiting Club, and all sorts of other school and work groups. James Hamilton has gone to great pains to identify the people in the photographs, and the vast majority of individuals are named. Local myths such as the story of the ghost that haunts the ruins of Broomhill House, and personalities such as Harry Dawson make this a really interesting read, with lots of in-depth text accompanying the wide range of pictures. The neighbouring villages of Netherburn, Ferniegair, Allanton, Millheugh, Summerlee and Swinhill have been included too.
Artikelname: Old Lesmahagow
Artikelbeschreibung: The blacksmith's shop, a travelling fair pitched near the gasworks, the opening of the 'joy wheel' in the public park, and a 1920s soup kitchen are some of the things featured by Tom Affleck in his book. There's a view of Milton Quarry, and pictures of horse-ploughing, haymaking, and a group of local fruit pickers. The bowling club, quoiting team, a group of cyclists astride penny-farthings and a five-a-side football team recall some of the village's leisure pursuits, while shops, streets and Robert Park's garage complete the picture of early twentieth century life in Lesmahagow.
Artikelname: Old Motherwell and Newarthill
Artikelbeschreibung: Motherwell is shown here at a time when trams clattered down Brandon Street (later to be completely demolished and rebuilt as Brandon Parade), and landmarks such as the Motherwell Inn were still standing. A couple of interesting pictures from the early 1960s show the town in transition, before the planners really got stuck into redeveloping it. A picture of West Hamilton Street proved virtually impossible to locate because almost every single building in it had been knocked down - it took a good few minutes' scrutiny by two lifelong residents of the town to finally identify it. Ten pictures of Newarthill, birthplace of Sir Robert McAlpine and an early mining settlement, tell the story of this nearby village.
Artikelname: Old Newmains and the villages around Wishaw
Artikelbeschreibung: This book tells the story of the villages that grew up around Wishaw (of which Newmains was the biggest), and contains a mixture of peaceful-looking village scenes and pictures of heavy industry. Many of the villages had rural beginnings, but became industrialised from the mid-nineteenth century onwards when nearby coal reserves were mined commercially, leading to a new source of employment. Cleland, Bellside, Cambusnethan, Newmains, Morningside, Bonkle, Allanton, Waterloo and Overtown are featured.
Artikelname: Old Shotts
Artikelbeschreibung: Our book on Shotts has been a huge hit with the local population, with all the town's newsagents (along with one in neighbouring Stane) ordering piles of copies. It includes pictures of the Miners' Welfare Institute, the Salon dance hall, a dramatic railway accident, St Patrick's brass band, Shotts Ironworks, Hartwood Hospital, Salsburgh, Stane, and the impressive Newhouse Hotel, a big art deco hotel and service station that was built next to the A8 Glasgow-Edinburgh road.
Artikelname: Old Uddington
Artikelbeschreibung: Uddingston is the town of my birth, and this is the follow-up to my own long out of print Bygone Uddingston (Richard Stenlake, 1988). The new book features different material including some photographs taken by myself in the early 1970s of buildings and streets which were obviously about to disappear - such as Old Mill Road, Muiredge Street and Lizzie's sweetie shop. The older material includes the old town, Main Street and the Cross, Clydeneuk House, Crofthead Street, Loancroft poultry farm and Watson Street. Also included are the bowling green, the cricket club (I found this photograph on waste ground many years ago), Tunnock's extension being built and the old gasworks. Other locations featured are Tannochside, Thorniewood, the old Daldowie House, Calderpark House, the village of Broomhouse and last but not least Calderpark Zoo, to which my siblings and I were despatched every school holiday (just for the morning or afternoon!).
Artikelname: Old Wishaw
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Wishaw took the town by storm when it was first published, outselling every other book in the area, including Michael Palin's latest best-seller. It includes Netherton, Craigneuk, the Glen Mill, West Cross, Low Main Street, Main Street (the whole length of it), Kirk Road, Caledonian Road, the Cross, Stewarton Street, Hill Street and Belhaven Road. There's some interesting social history in the shape of a Lipton's shop front, the Royal Naval Ambulance Train in the station in 1918, Gilchrist the famous bone-setter, a horse-drawn Co-op milk cart and a view of Wishaw fair. It's a really first-rate selection of pictures accompanied by Rhona Wilson's usual rattling text.
