Artikelname: Aberdeen Remembered
Artikelbeschreibung: Aberdeen Remembered covers many aspects of the city's past and contains a varied selection of pictures, all accompanied by detailed captions. The Castlegate is seen before and after the building of the Salvation Army Citadel, whilst a surprisingly modern view (c.1955) shows cattle being driven across George Street in the days when the market and slaughterhouse operated nearby. There's coverage of transport in the city - public and private, horse-drawn and mechanical - as well as several views of the beach and its attractions. A number of pictures recall Aberdeen's industrial heritage, whilst numerous photographs tell the story of fishing and its related processes. Some of the city's former markets are featured, as are the prefab houses at Ashgrove, an 1875 view of the city's fire brigade, model yachts in Duthie Park and the Girls' Academy, amongst other subjects.

Along with statistics detailing closures, many stations are featured including: Alford, Boddam, Monymusk, Kemnay, Aboyne, Lumphanan, Culter, Murtle, Hatton, Lonmay, Brucklay, Newmachar, Auchterless, Inverugie, Cairnie Junction, Kennethmont, Kintore and Pitmedden.

Artikelname: Angus & Kincardineshire's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: Dundee had one of the earliest railway systems in Scotland (dating from the 1830s), and by the early 1900s a network of lines served virtually every town and village in Angus and Kincardineshire. Today there are just eleven stations remaining in the two counties covered by this book, although passengers can travel back in time by taking a ride on the preserved steam railway between Brechin and the Bridge of Dun. Stations illustrating Gordon Stansfield's text include Laurencekirk, Marykirk, Drumlithie, Newtyle, Baldovan and Downfield, Lochee West, Colliston, Leysmill, Crathes, Brechin, West Ferry, Elliot Junction, Lunan Bay, Portlethen, Justinhaugh, Tannadice, Dundee East and West, Edzell, Barnhill, Johnshaven, St Cyrus, Kirriemuir, Forfar, Guthrie, Auldbar Road, Dubton, Hillside and Newtonhill.

Artikelname: Banff, Moray & Nairn's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: From over a hundred stations between them, Banff, Moray and Nairn now have just four. During the late nineteenth century fishing, agriculture, tourism and whisky fuelled the rapid development of the north-east's rail network. Gordon Stansfield's text is illustrated mainly with photographs taken in the 1950s and 60s - just before the major closures - along with some Edwardian postcards. Stations featured include Banff, Golf Club House Halt, Cornhill, Macduff, Cromdale, Dava, Ballindalloch, Knockando, Carron, Aberlour, Urquhart, Tillynaught, Rothes, Fochabers Town, Dunphail, Grantown on Spey, Mulben, Orton, Alves, Lossiemouth, Banff Bridge, Towiemore, Drummuir, Portsoy, Tochieneal, Cullen, Portknockie, Buckie, and Buckpool.

Artikelname: Bygone Fraserburgh
Artikelbeschreibung: Fraserburgh is famed as a fishing port, and every aspect of this cornerstone of the local economy is recorded in Jim Buchan's book. There are pictures illustrating the conversion of the town's fishing fleet from sail to steam, a fish auction on the quay, herring gutters and packers at work, a new harbour extension being built and opened, and two of Alexander Duthie's sailing ships off the coast of Australia where they were involved in the annual wool trade. Many more photographs and pages are also devoted to fishing, while other subjects covered include the enigmatic Wine Tower, some of the ships to have foundered off the Fraserburgh coast in past years, and even Buffalo Bill's visit to the town in 1904. There are six interesting views of the Consolidated Pneumatic Tool Co.'s extensive works, along with pictures of the town's main streets, making this a very comprehensive book.

Artikelname: Bygone Peterhead
Artikelbeschreibung: Bygone Peterhead gives a taste of early to mid-twentieth century life in the old harbour town with a wide variety of photographs. Local industry is represented by the herring boats and their fishermen and fishwives, together with other businesses important to the Peterhead in the past such as the Great North of Scotland Granite Co. and the Invernettie Brickworks. The harbour is strongly featured with a stunning photograph of around 9,000 spectators at the ceremony to commemorate the completion of work at South Harbour in 1908. There are also treats such as Peterhead's first fire engine and James Cassie's general store, which sold everything from tea to guns.

Artikelname: Grampian's Last Days of Steam
Artikelbeschreibung: Grampian region comprises the counties of Aberdeen, Kincardine, Banff and Moray. The railways were relatively late in arriving in this part of Scotland and it wasn't until 1850 that a line reached Ferryhill on the outskirts of the Granite City. However, expansion followed rapidly so that eventually the Great North of Scotland Railway - the company that dominated the region - totalled 334 route miles and had a stock of 122 locomotives. In this history by W.A.C. Smith, the whole story is told with a wealth of fascinating detail and the book contains 54 superb photographs by the author, taken during the 1950s and '60s - the last days of steam. Locations featured include: Kinnaber Junction, Inverurie, Dunphail, Stonehaven, Portlethen, Cove Bay, Ferryhill, Aberdeen Joint Station, Kittybrewster, Maud Junction, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, St Combs, Macduff, Banff Harbour, Ladysbridge, Tillynaught, Portgordon, Keith, Craigellachie, Rothes, Elgin, Alves, and Forres.

Artikelname: Old Banchory
Artikelbeschreibung: The arrival of the railway in 1853 confirmed picturesque Banchory as an important destination on the Royal Deeside tourist route, while in more recent years it has become an increasingly popular dormitory town for Aberdeen commuters. As well as the neat High Street, and well-loved shops such as D'Agostino's Italian ice-cream parlour, there are pictures of the Mill of Hirn, the Old Toll House at the Bridge of Feugh, an intrepid Mr Bowman diving into the Dee, and the Royal Train as it passes through the town. A horse-drawn reaper, the local lavender farm and the saw and bobbin mills illustrate other interesting aspects of the town's history.

Artikelname: Old Banff and Macduff
Artikelbeschreibung: The communities of Banff and Macduff traditionally centred around farming and fishing, although at one time Banff council had to pay fishermen to settle at the Seatown (later called Scotstown), and it wasn't until the 1850s that a proper fishing community was established there. The river Deveron separates the two communities and a ferry originally plied across it. There were regular accidents, and in 1773 it was observed that 'the seven lives [recently] lost call loudly for a bridge'. As in his other books, Alan Cooper's text is typically comprehensive, and as well as containing mainstream historical information, also includes some fascinating gems such as the story of eccentric showman Walford Bodie, who lived in Manor House, Macduff.

Artikelname: Old Buckie
Artikelbeschreibung: Ianstown, Strathlene sands, the old harbour at Buckpool and Buckie station are some of the locations featured in Old Buckie. There are also pictures of Portessie, Craigmin Bridge, East and West Church Street, Cluny Square and the High Street

Artikelname: Old Cruden Bay & Port Erroll
Artikelbeschreibung: The detailed captions in this informative book provide a wealth of insight into the history of the fishing villages of Scotland's North East coast. The roll of the fishwives who would walk distances of up to 20 miles in a day with a creel of fish on their backs for sale or dig for bait for their men on the shores of Cruden bay was crucial to the subsistence of families. In later times the Great North of Scotland Railway and Bram Stoker helped to popularise the area as a tourist attraction. The railway built the enormous Cruden Bay Hotel and in 1899 an inaugural Cruden Bay 'Open Professional Golf Tournament' was held.

Artikelname: Old Cullen and Portsoy
Artikelbeschreibung: Alan Cooper's latest book on the north-east of Scotland combines an excellent collection of photographs with in-depth captions detailing the history of these neighbouring fishing towns. The turbulent history of Cullen House, and the internal wrangling that led to several of the Earls of Seafield being denied their inheritance, contrasts with pictures of ordinary townsfolk going about their business of fishing and farming. There's local colour in the form of cave-dweller Charles Marione (unceremoniously evicted in 1933), pictures of a travelling zoo in the Square, Cullen, and historic fifteenth century buildings at Portsoy harbour photographed before their untimely demolition. The final picture in the book is of the lime kilns at Boyne.

Artikelname: Old Elgin
Artikelbeschreibung: Besides the expected views of the town, the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace are the Oakwood Rustic Motel (possibly Scotland's first motel), some sensational views of locomotives struggling through the 1915 floods, Bishopsmill and New Elgin.

Artikelname: Old Ellon
Artikelbeschreibung: As the market town for a large agricultural hinterland, and with shipping and railway connections making it an important transport hub, Ellon has a long and distinguished history. Linda Birnie's captions provide a detailed picture of the development of the town, accompanying photographs of local landmarks such as the castle, old bridge, Neil Ross's garage, the station and the Square. There are also pictures of local farms and some of the area's big houses, along with a brief history of shipping on the Ythan.

Artikelname: Old Huntly
Artikelbeschreibung: With its castle, hotels and shops, Huntly has long served as the focal point for its surrounding rural hinterland. Alan Cooper recalls erstwhile characters such as 'Pig' Murray, the town crier, and tells the story of the tinkers who used to visit the town. There was once a shoemaking factory in the Square that employed 150 people, and a brewery just outside the town that produced Strathbogie Stout. Pictures of Kennethmont and Gartly stations, along with a view of the Gartly picnic and games, draw in some locations just outside the town, although the bulk of the book covers Huntly itself.

Artikelname: Old Inverurie and Kemnay
Artikelbeschreibung: Inverurie is best-known for its locomotive works and Kemnay for its quarries, and both these important local industries are covered in this book. Originally a small farming community, Inverurie began to prosper with the opening of the Aberdeenshire Canal in 1805. This was superseded by the Great North of Scotland Railway's line from Aberdeen (opened in 1854), and the town's railway associations were confirmed when the GNSR's locomotive works were relocated there in the early years of the twentieth century. Keenly aware of the opportunities (and threats!) posed by motor transport, the GNSR also operated its own buses in this part of Scotland, and two of these have been included in the book. Elsewhere you'll find pictures of all the key streets and sights of both Inverurie and Kemnay, accompanied by detailed captions.

Artikelname: Old Keith
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Keith gives an insight into the ancient town's past. Rothiemay House, the Tower of Milton, Longmore Hall and the so-called 'Auld Brig' all appear. The River Isla is photographed together with the Isla Bank Mills. Other local businesses include William Bremner shoemaker and cobbler and the old wool mill. Learn about Keith's famous sons such as James Ferguson (astronomer) and James Gordon Bennett (founder of the New York Herald). The Gordon Arms Hotel is photographed and there are interesting tales about the whisky smuggling that went on in Keith's past. Grange and Newmill are also featured. There are photographs of the 1909 Annual Camp of the Gordon Highlander Territorials and of much younger soldiers, the Keith Boy Scouts.

Artikelname: Old Lossiemouth
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Lossiemouth is a wonderful read with sound research backed up by Donald Stewart's exceptional local knowledge. Photographs include the cave dwellings at Covesea, local worthy Alexander Thomson and local hero Ramsay MacDonald. Local industries featured include the Morayshire tile works in addition to farming, fishing and quarries. The book's great strength is its stories of 'Old Lossie' - find out why Lossie locals are known as 'dogwallers' and what Miss Asquith, daughter of the Prime Minister, had to contend with at the Moray Golf Club.

Artikelname: Old Lower Deeside
Artikelbeschreibung: The area covered by Old Lower Deeside extends from the mouth of the River Dee at Aberdeen to Crathes in the west. Once served by the railway line known as the 'Royal Route', which ran along the north bank of the river, the small villages of Lower Deeside became magnets for commuters in the late nineteenth century and today are well-to-do dormitory suburbs. The pictures in this book take in the key settlements of Cults, Bieldside and Culter, as well as numerous interesting estates, ferries, and big houses on both sides of the river, many of which are not usually accessible to the public or have changed beyond recognition over the years. Among the items featured are an early ferry for those travelling to and from Torry; Gorrod & Davie's mill in Cults; the Heathcot Ferry (which operated between Bieldside and Blairs); numerous stations on the old Deeside line, including Murtle and Milltimber; Lynn Park tearooms and recreation ground in Maryculter; the May Wallie at Culter; and the hamlet of Kirton of Durris.

Artikelname: Old Midmar & Cromar with Torphins and Lumphanan
Artikelbeschreibung: The districts of Aberdeenshire covered in this book lie 'twixt Dee and Don' and, collectively, the villages in this area are known as Midmar and Cromar. A rural region dependent on agriculture, it was transformed by the arrival of the railway in the nineteenth century and benefited from the North Sea oil boom of the twentieth. This book tells its story, accompanied by over 55 photographs from the early 1900s. The villages and communities featured include Logie Coldstone, Milton of Cushnie, Tarland, Lumphanan, Craigievar, Tornaveen, Torphins, Glassel, Comers and Midmar.

Artikelname: Old Newtonhill and Muchalls
Artikelbeschreibung: The village of Newtonhill grew out of an adjacent fishing community called Skateraw, and when steam trawlers from Aberdeen made sail-powered fishing boats redundant in the 1880s, the old cottages of Skateraw were taken over by commuters and also began to be used as holiday homes. Newtonhill grew up around the station and provided the village's new name. Muchalls, too, owes its origins to a village of another name which it eventually superseded, this time called Stranathro. Once renowned for its insanitary conditions, Stranathro was rebuilt as a model village in the 1850s, probably changing its name to Muchalls around the same time. Both Newtonhill and Muchalls are illustrated with a wide range of pictures that include local fishermen at work, the area's watermills, a wrecked schooner, the Marine Hotel in its heyday, and even 'Nippie' Middleton, an Edwardian cave-dweller. Two poems by Andrew Christie recall many local people and numerous long-lost traditions and events associated with both villages

Artikelname: Old Oldmeldrum
Artikelbeschreibung: Oldmeldrum has been done proud with the selection of illustrations in this book. Amongst these there are Baker Andrew Cobban and staff, Cowgate, Market Square, Adam Duthie's Store, the Commercial Hotel, Urquhart Road, the Free Church, Meldrum Parish Church, Church Street, Commercial Road, the Station, Meldrum Arms Hotel, Mill of Cromlet, Cromlet House, Mournie Castle, Glengarioch Distillery, & a number of agricultural and farming scenes from the surrounding area.

Artikelname: Old Royal Deeside
Artikelbeschreibung: There's more to Royal Deeside than Braemar, Balmoral and Crathie Church - although these are all included in this book. David Jamieson and W. Stewart Wilson have also selected fantastic pictures of the buses (including one in a ditch) and trains that served this rural area, the mills at Birse (one of which makes wooden pails), the story behind the Pannanich Wells Hotel, and a picture of the water clock at Dinnet. Other Deeside locations featured are: Strachan, Birse Castle, Finzean, Glassel, Torphins, Lumphanan, Potarch, Kincardine O'Neil, Aboyne, Tarland, Cambus O' May, Glentanar, Ballaterach, Ballater, Abergeldie, Birkhall, Glen Muick and Lochnagar.

Artikelname: Old Stonehaven
Artikelbeschreibung: Stonehaven once thrived as a fishing port, and many pictures in this book illustrate fishing families mending and baiting lines, and the fishing fleet going about its business. Some of the more unusual subjects include a whale that was beached in the bay in 1906, waves crashing over the promenade, and trees - washed down by a flood - jamming Cowie Bridge. The town itself is covered extensively, and pictures include the former Queen's Cinema and the old poorhouse, which has recently been converted into flats.

Artikelname: Old Turriff
Artikelbeschreibung: Alan Cooper has written several books for us over the past few years and his captions for Old Turriff are typically full and informative. Among the subjects featured are several pictures of the station, plus High Street, Balmellie Street, Main Street, Chapel Street and Skene Croft. My personal favourites, however, are those of the Turra Coo, forcibly sold as a result of a farmer's protest over National Insurance and then later triumphantly returned to him having been bought back by his supporters.

Artikelname: Old Udny, Tarves and Methlick
Artikelbeschreibung: Udny, Tarves and Methilick, three small but interesting Aberdeenshire villages that up until the later half of the 20th cetury relied on agriculture as their main source of income, but being only around 25 miles from Aberdeen these quaint villages have now become a commuter’s paradise. This book is a nostalgic look back at those early 20th century days when you were more likely to pass a horse on the road than a car, when children played in the street with no shoes and trains were on time. There are images of Collynie Farm which even today is fully operational, Udny Station, Woodside Terrace built by the eccentric James Duncan out of local granite, The Square in Tarves which has barely changed since it was built and the glorious Haddo House which was built in the early eighteenth century

Artikelname: Wheels Around Aberdeen
Artikelbeschreibung: Alan Brotchie's latest Wheels Around book is typically wide-ranging, featuring aircraft, steam wagons (plus a steam road roller) and even a wheeled device for hauling in salmon nets from the River Dee. More typical are the buses, trains, trams, cars, bicycles and lorries that can be seen going about their business on the city's streets. Culter station, the Murcar trainie (which ran from near Bridge of Don to Murcar Golf Club), busy dock scenes at South Market Street, the launch of a vessel from Hall, Russell's shipyard and the tank Julian on a First World War visit to the city are some of the specific sights to be featured in the book.. As ever, there is as much interest in the backgrounds of the pictures as in the vehicles they show, and this will ensure that Wheels Around Aberdeen appeals to those with a general interest in the city's history as well as transport enthusiasts.
