Old Portobello

Portobello owes its existence to a brick and tile works which was built in the vicinity in the late eighteenth century. A village developed and prospered as further industry arrived, while the growth of sea-bathing brought visitors from Edinburgh and elsewhere. Margeorie Mekie's informative book includes all key aspects of the town, with good coverage of the spectacular Marine Gardens, an early amusement park with wild animals, roller coaster and many other exciting attractions. The pier, the spectacular art deco outdoor swimming pool and diving boards (now demolished), Piershill Barracks and Queen's Bay Hotel in Joppa feature too. In fact there are several photographs of Joppa including the historic salt pans and the tram terminus where Edinburgh's cable cars once met Musselburgh's state-of-the-art electric trams
