Artikelname: Around Helensburgh
Artikelbeschreibung: This splendid collection of over 200 photographs examines the rich history of Helensburgh, from a sea front village to the town it is today. Through images depicting people, places and events, the reader is taken on a pictorial guided tour of Helensburgh and the neighbouring communities of Rhu, Shandon, Glen Fruin and Faslane. The influx of successful merchants and industrialists and the coming of the railway from Glasgow 150 years ago are chronicled, along with the development and passing of the Clyde steamer services and the arrival of the principal employer in the district, HM Naval Base Clyde. The photographs in this compilation, many of which have never been published before, have been carefully gathered from the family archives of the members and supporters of Helensburgh Heritage Trust.
Artikelname: Bygone Clydebank
Artikelbeschreibung: The origins of Clydebank can be traced back to 1 May 1871 when the first turf of Clydebank Shipyard was cut on the farmlands of West Barns o' Clyde. Next to come was the Singer Manufacturing Company and burgh status for the fledgling community that clustered around these industrial concerns followed in 1886. Population growth rocketed throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries ? the period covered in this volume, containing over 50 period photographs ? and the burgh boundaries were expanded not once but four times. In this history of the town, many long-gone sights from those times are recalled ? trams on Dumbarton Road, Clydebank School on Kilbowie Road, Kilbowie railway station, Singer's Kilbowie factory, the 'Holy City', and many of the local shops and businesses that served the town.
Artikelname: Glasgow and Dunbartonshire's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: Glasgow is unique among British cities in that it has the largest rail network outside of London, and there was once a time when the city had four very grand stations - Central, Queen Street, St Enoch's and Buchanan Street. Two of these have gone, but the years up to the 1960s - the heyday of the city's railways - are captured in this collection of fifty-two photographs from the period, accompanied by a history of each of the city's lines. The neighbouring region of Dunbartonshire is also covered and was itself unique in that Milngavie was the home of one of the world's first monorail systems. Stations featured in the book - many of them long gone - include Cowlairs, Possilpark, Eglinton Street, Buchanan Street, Dalmuir Riverside, Stobcross, Bellahouston, Summerston, Maryhill Central, St Enoch's, Partick West, Cumberland Street, the Singer Terminal (Clydebank), Rutherglen and Strathbungo.

Artikelbeschreibung: Packed with over two hundred illustrations, this is the fifth and latest book in the Stenlake mining series. Combined sales of the previous four volumes now exceed 10,000 copies. The somewhat unwieldy title reflects the spread-out nature of the area covered - the old counties of Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire and East Dunbartonshire and the valleys of the Kelvin, the Bonny, the Forth and the Carron together with the Slamannan Plateau. More specifically mining in the following areas is featured - Baldernock, Kirkintilloch, Croy, Twechar, Auchenreoch, Kilsyth, Nethercroy, Dullatur, Denny, Bonnybridge, Redding, Shieldhill, Slamannan, Standburn, Maddiston, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Airth, Plean, Bannockburn, Cowie, Millhall, Fallin, Glenochil, Alloa, Sauchie, Tillicoultry, Dollar. Amongst the many collieries, pits and mines featured are Castlecary, Woodilee, Meiklehill, Gartshore, St Flannan's, Dumbreck, Gardrum, Polmaise, Manor-Powis, Devon, Sherriffyards and Bessie Glen. Also included are scenes of the communities themselves plus social and sporting activities such as local bands and football teams.
Artikelname: Old Alexandria, Bonhill & Renton
Artikelbeschreibung: Excellent pictures of the streets and shops of Alexandria, Bonhill and Renton are coupled with photographs of the local factories. An aerial view shows the various print- and dyeworks that were situated along the banks of the Leven, and there are several pictures of the ornate Argyll Motor Works, with their opulent marble offices. Renton Bowling Club, children paddling in the river, trams in Main Street, Bonhill Bridge and a fire at the yarn warehouse at Dillichip works are some of the other pictures featured.
Artikelname: Old Bearsden
Artikelbeschreibung: The douce Glasgow suburb is amply covered in this volume. While much of Bearsden has not changed and retains its gentle pace of life, also included here are pictures of buildings and landmarks demolished during the twentieth century, such as the Old Coach House, Garscube House, New Kilpatrick United Presbyterian Church (the Luftwaffe helped with its destruction), the Old School and the 'New School'. Besides the expected Douglas Place, Roman Road and Canniesburn Toll etc. there are views of Drewsteignton Home School, Buchanan Retreat, Mains, the shops at Kessington in the 1920s, Killermont Golf Course ... and more! You won't be disappointed!
Artikelname: Old Bowling, Duntocher, Hardgate, Milton and Old Kilpatrick
Artikelbeschreibung: Each of these five villages has ancient origins, although it wasn't until after the eighteenth century that they really developed as industrial centres, exploiting the various sources of water power that were available. The many fast-flowing burns were ideal for mills, nailworks, forges, bleaching works and other types of industry, and Bowling was ideally situated at the western end of the Forth & Clyde Canal to specialise in ship building and repair. Of course, most of these industries are gone now, but this collection of 56 photographs from the first half of the twentieth century recalls the latter days of prosperity. In addition to a wealth of street scenes, among the many long-gone sights included are the Old Kilpatrick ferry, the fully operational Bowling Railway Station, and Bowling Harbour packed with steamships.
Artikelname: Old Clydebank
Artikelbeschreibung: The town of Clydebank was formed in the late nineteenth century when J. & G. Thomson's shipyard, Clyde Bank, was forced to relocate from Govan because a new dock was being built on its old site. When the giant Singer sewing machine factory was built nearby, more workers flooded into the new town. Included in Sheila Struthers' book are views of shipbuilding on the Clyde, the Queen Mary under construction, the ferries that plied between Yoker and Renfrew, local football teams, several pictures of Dalmuir and all the important streets and sights of Clydebank itself.
Artikelname: Old Cumbernauld with Condorrat and Castlecary
Artikelbeschreibung: Guthrie Hutton, the seasoned Stenlake Publishing author, strolls through the years from the villages’ small beginnings and onward to their transformation into a vibrant new town, a result of plans to ease overpopulation in Glasgow. It includes striking early images such as the Main Street in Cumbernauld village in 1927 and a rare photograph of the lost village of South Muirhead, which was demolished to make way for the new town. Also featured is the notorious Town Centre mega structure in Cumbernauld, built in 1968 and disliked ever since. This is a great guide for anyone interested in the history and development of the area throughout the 20th century, and is both informative and visually impressive while retaining a simplicity that allows you to enjoy the title without being weighed down by too many facts and figures.
Artikelname: Old Dalmuir
Artikelbeschreibung: From the late eighteenth century the areas of Dalmuir Glen and Dalmuir Shore were subject to industrial developments such as calico printworks, paper mills, and even soda manufacturing, but it was the opening of workshops by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1859 and Beardmore's Dalmuir Naval Construction Works in 1906 which had the most impact. The local community expanded as a result and when Beardmore's closed in 1931 it was a massive blow. However, employment was still readily available at the shipyards in nearby Clydebank and, together with a wide range of good-quality housing, excellent local schools and community facilities, Dalmuir residents enjoyed a reasonably comfortable standard of living. This was a time when crowds and marching bands would turn out for the opening of Dalmuir Park, trams provided easy access into Clydebank and Glasgow, and local lads were assured of an apprenticeship at one of the yards. This history recalls these facets of Dalmuir life and many more amongst its 54 period photographs.
Artikelname: Old Dumbarton
Artikelbeschreibung: An aerial photograph of Dumbarton Rock and Castle, with shipyards behind it, encapsulates two important aspects of the town's history in one. There are pictures of a variety of Dumbarton's factories and yards, and a shot of the steamer TSS Queen Mary II, built in the town. Glasgow Road, Church Street, Castle Street, High Street, and lost buildings such as the Cosy Corner Cafe on Bridge Street, are all featured. Local schools, some of the big houses built by the Victorian industrialists, the hospital and Levengrove Park are among some of the other pictures included.
Artikelname: Old Garelochhead & the Rosneath Peninsula
Artikelbeschreibung: By the middle of the nineteenth century, steamers were calling at Garelochhead and the villages of the Rosneath peninsula, bringing in visitors and allowing prosperous Glaswegians to live in the country and commute to the city along the river. When a railway station was opened at Whistlefield in 1896 combined steamer and rail trips were introduced, attracting more day-trippers to the picturesque lochside villages of Portincaple, Clynder, Rosneath, Kilcreggan and Cove (all of which are featured). As well as the likes of Garelochhead smiddy and the inn at Whistlefield, there are pictures of the boat building yards at Clynder and Rosneath and the military hospital at Portkil, built by American forces in 1942.
Artikelname: Old Helensburgh, Rhu & Shandon
Artikelbeschreibung: Helensburgh was planned as a new town by Sir James Colquhoun of Luss, and its streets were laid out in the late eighteenth century. The area's outstanding scenery and clean air attracted wealthy Glasgow merchants to the town, who built villas there overlooking the Clyde and Gare Loch. For well over a century, until after the Second World War, Helensburgh thrived as a seaside resort. Pictures of the Waverley at Craigendoran Pier, sandcastle building competitions, throngs enjoying the outdoor swimming pool, and a horse-drawn excursion on Sinclair Street show the town in its heyday, while half a dozen photographs cover neighbouring Rhu and Shandon.
Artikelname: Old Kirkintilloch
Artikelbeschreibung: During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Kirkintilloch found itself at the centre of a transport network that was unrivalled in Scotland. The cutting of the Forth & Clyde Canal, and the subsequent building of the Monkland & Kirkintilloch Railway, meant that it became a transport hub that was ideally situated to trade with Scotland's cities, as well as exploiting its own local mineral reserves. It flourished, with mining and iron-founding just two of the industries that generated employment and large amounts of revenue. Local businesses such as Mavor & Coulson and the Star Foundry illustrate Kirky's industrial past, while the story of Lanfine and Broomhill homes recalls another local employer and important presence in the district. The village of Waterside is included too, along with many interesting sights from Kirkintilloch's past.
Artikelname: Old Lenzie
Artikelbeschreibung: Lenzie's leafy streets and solid villas suggest that it has a long history, but in fact it originated as a brand new commuter suburb following the opening of the railway line between Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1842. Development was slow to begin with, but took off in the 1870s when many streets and houses were built. The pictures in this book illustrate Lenzie's shops, businesses and homes, along with sporting groups including the rugby, bowling, cricket, tennis and golf clubs. The histories of Woodilee Hospital and Lenzie Academy are included too, while Auchinloch, with its mining legacy, features in four photographs. Spider Bridge (now demolished), a spectacular locomotive derailment, harvesting at Wester Gallowhill Farm, and a group of skaters on the Gadloch are some of the other items included.
Artikelname: Old Loch Lomondside
Artikelbeschreibung: Most of the photographs in this book date from the 1890s to the 1930s and with a few exceptions are bereft of the motor traffic which clutters the roads around Loch Lomond today. The photographs show forgotten, but once common, sights: skaters on the frozen loch, farming on the banks with a horse-drawn plough, the British Silk Dyeing factory at Balloch, the grandeur of Tullichewan Castle, steamers on the loch and four-in-hand coaches and much more - an insight into a time when tourism was more exclusive and moved at a slower pace.
Artikelname: Old Milngavie
Artikelbeschreibung: Demure Milngavie was the location for an extraordinary experiment in public transport during the 1920s. George Bennie's railplane propelled pod-like carriages along elevated tracks using a propellor, and two fine pictures of the prototype line and carriage, built in Milngavie, feature in James Crawford's book. Elsewhere the town looks more familiar, with Main Street and Douglas Street recognisable, but showing changes too. Lost landmarks such as the station goods yard, and a picture of Allander Toll long before the roundabout was built there, are two of many other interesting pictures in the book.
Artikelname: Steamers of Loch Lomond
Artikelbeschreibung: From 1818 to 1981 there were steamers in operation on Loch Lomond, the first being the Marion, which catered mainly for the demands of early tourism, and the last the Maid of the Loch. In the intervening period Loch Lomond's steamers were an integral part of the transport system of the district. The heyday of these steamer services is featured extensively in this photographic history.
