Artikelname: Old Gretna
Artikelbeschreibung: Old Gretna tells the tale of a village still famed as an elopement destination, and is illustrated with photographs of 'priests' and various places where an English couple could be wed such as Gretna Hall and the Queen's Head Hotel. Read about the disapproval of Gretna's parish minister, the story of Lord Erskine's farcical elopement in 1816 and that of James Goldsmith in 1953. The First World War had a major impact on Gretna and there is a large section devoted to the munitions factory and township which was built in 1916. The 'Gretna Girls' are featured both in photograph and poem, together with stories of the social consequences of having so many people together in a district with few entertainment facilities - the township could get very rowdy indeed! On a more sober note there are also photographs of the Quintinshill rail disaster of 1916 during which 220 soldiers lost their lives. Dornock village is also featured.

Kirkcudbright's more recent history includes the important Tongland Works, used as a munitions factory during the First World War, then for the manufacturing of cars by a branch of the famous Arrol-Johnston company. Local personalities such as John Houston, postman and 'weather prophet', feature along with artists Jessie M. King and E. A. Taylor. Artikelname: Old Portpatrick
Artikelbeschreibung: Portpatrick's history is inextricably linked to the sea. Several pictures illustrate the coastguard's 'rocket life-saving apparatus', which fired a line from land to endangered ships and allowed stranded crew to be brought ashore by means of pulleys and a harness. Lifeboats in action, the steamer Tyrconnel stranded on rocks, cod being sorted prior to despatch to London and an excursion steamer berthed in the harbour are all featured. One of Dr Carroll's fund-raising sandcastles, and a picture of Dirk Bogarde chatting with an elderly resident during filming of the 1951 movie Hunted, are two of the more unusual items in this comprehensive collection.
Artikelname: Old Stranraer and Cairnryan
Artikelbeschreibung: Catalysed by the introduction of a regular steamer service to Ireland from the 1860s, Stranraer flourished, with numerous hotels lining George Street along with an impressive array of shops. In Donnie Nelson's book the town is seen during its Victorian and Edwardian heyday, with a variety of vessels from the Princess line plying the waters of Loch Ryan at a time when Stranraer had a well-used railway service that connected with the steamers. Photos of Agnew Crescent illustrate this attractive stretch of promenade before the Clayhole Bay area was filled in to provide parking. Other views show a calamitous fire at Greenvale Steam Laundry and an impressive fish sale at the Breastwork. Cairnryan's story - from sleepy village to industrial-scale port - is illustrated in a series of views charting the development of this nearby community. Mansions such as Lochinch Castle and Lochryan House contrast with the more modest cottages of Castle Kennedy, a planned estate village, while two fascinating photos from the pioneering years of aviation show flimsy looking aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps at Cults Farm.
Artikelname: Old Wigtown
Artikelbeschreibung: Before the coming of the railway reduced its importance as a port, Wigtown prospered as a market town, benefiting from the right to charge dues on all sheep, cattle and wool crossing the River Cree. There was a darker side to Wigtown's history, however, and two female Covenanters are believed to have been drowned there in 1685. Neighbouring Bladnoch and Kirkinner are included in this book too. Bladnoch was a centre of commerce and industry with its iron foundry, coachbuilders, distillery, creamery and mill, while there are also pictures of the RAF airfield at Baldoon Park, plus the village of Kirkinner and its station.
Artikelname: The Central Stewartry
Artikelbeschreibung: The Central Stewartry covers Borgue, Twynholm and Gatehouse of Fleet, along with some of the smaller settlements in this lush and attractive corner of what was once part of Kirkcudbrightshire. Belted Galloway cattle, the smuggler Dirk Hatteraick's cave, the Fleet Canal, Gatehouse station (long-closed and famous for its remoteness from the town it served) and the architectural flights of fancy dreamt up by Victorian industrialist James Brown in and around Kirkandrews are some of the sights on offer.

A companion volume to The Upper Glen Kens, this book covers Laurieston, Mossdale, New Galloway, Murray's Monument, Ken Bridge, Boat of Rhone, Parton and Crossmichael. It includes pictures of mansion-houses that most people won't have seen before, the old ferry at Boat of Rhone, vintage buses at New Galloway station, plus lots of attractive street scenes showing these popular villages and their occupants in the first half of the twentieth century.
Artikelname: The Solway Coast, Powfoot to Caulkerbush
