Old Galston
The third in our series on the Irvine Valley towns (volumes on Darvel and Newmilns have already been published), Old Galston features over fifty very rare and unpublished photographs from previously untapped local picture collections. They are accompanied by a full history of this ancient community and the text includes extensive reference to the news stories of yesteryear, including the daring robbery of Co-op's safe in 1920 (the robbers later tried to blow open the safe in a field, but blew up the takings instead) and the day in 1903 when a bull went on the rampage down the main street. It also covers the history of the major industries of the past, the mills and the mines. The author, Hugh Maxwell, is a native of the area and contributes historical articles to both the Scots Magazine and Scottish Memories.
