Artikelname: Ayrshire & Renfrewshire's Lost Railways
Artikelbeschreibung: Vital statistics on the closed lines and stations in these counties, accompanied by 52 photographs illustrating many of the locations featured. The original Wemyss Bay station, forerunner to the extravagant mock-Tudor structure that exists today, a railbus at Crosshouse, and the sorry spectacle of Kilwinning East station during demolition are some of the many subjects included.
Artikelname: Ayrshire's Last Days of Steam
Artikelbeschreibung: The second title in our new railway series which concentrates on the 1950s and '60's, the last days of steam before diesel, electric power, and Dr Beeching's axe came along to change the railways for ever. Whether these changes were for better or worse (and many today would say the latter), the photographs taken by W.A.C. Smith in those days and collected in this book are an invaluable record of an era when steam ruled and trains were never late. Features 59 excellent photographs of most of the stations which once served Ayrshire including Kilmarnock, Darvel, Mauchline, Dalry, Kilwinning, Saltcoats, plus many others.
Artikelname: Clyde Coast Picture Palaces
Artikelbeschreibung: Cinema architecture has traditionally ranged from the grandiose to the distinctly basic, and the cinemas along the Clyde and Ayrshire coasts represented these extremes and everything in between. Flights of fantasy such as the Viking in Largs (illustrated on the front cover) contrast with the likes of the Picture Palace in Helensburgh, which was little more than a corrugated shack - and certainly not a palace. Elsewhere, interior shots of modish foyers show Art Deco detailing and modernist furniture, while outside posters advertise long-forgotten celluloid classics such as Attack of the Crab Monsters. Towns included in Bruce Peter's (admittedly rather liberal) definition of 'Clyde Coast' are: Clydebank, Renfrew, Dumbarton, Helensburgh, Port Glasgow, Greenock, Gourock, Dunoon, Rothesay, Millport, Largs, Saltcoats, Ardrossan, Stevenston, Troon, Irvine, Prestwick, Ayr ... and Campbeltown.
Artikelname: Mining, Ayrshire's Lost Industry: An Illustrated History of the Mines and Miners of Ayrshire and Upper Nithsdale
Artikelbeschreibung: In many ways mining is Scotland's ghost industry - many of its former settlements have virtually completely vanished - and Guthrie Hutton's researches for this book spanned the length and breadth of Ayrshire and Upper Nithsdale as he tracked down former miners and located pictures of long-lost pits. Among the many places and pits featured are Auchenharvie, Glenburn, Auchencruive, Drumley, Killoch, Polquhairn, Houldsworth, Pennyvenie, Minnivey, Mauchline, Highhouse, Barony, Kames, Afton, Knockshinnoch Castle, Fauldhead and Killochan. There are over 200 illustrations covering all aspects of mining life.
Artikelname: More Old Beith
Artikelbeschreibung: A follow-up to the hugely popular Old Beith, this book features another fascinating ramble through over fifty period photographs of the town and neighbouring Barrmill and Gateside – many never before published. Subjects include the fire at the West of Scotland Cabinet Works, the Caledonia Works’ Aircraft Department, Glengarnock Steelworks, The local Home Guard, and many local businesses and street scenes from years gone by.
Artikelname: Old Annbank and Mossblown
Artikelbeschreibung: Annbank and Mossblown were products of the industrial-scale coal mining which took place in this part of Ayrshire from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. All the early housing was built by the mining companies for their employees, and accommodation was generally basic. During the 1930s Annbank's original miners' rows were replaced by new housing built partly by Bairds & Dalmellington (one of the coal owners), with other houses belonging to Ayr County Council. The village's transition during this dramatic period is shown in a variety of before, during and after photographs. Local people such as the political legend James Brown and village worthy Hugh Dunlop feature among pictures of key locations and events in Annbank, Mossblown and the now-vanished hamlets of Burnbrae, Craighall, Tarholm and Woodside. There are pictures of the local pits, as well as landmarks including Privick Mill, Gadgirth Bridge, Annbank brickworks, the Clarke Memorial Hall and Bogend Toll, scene of a violent murder in 1877.
Artikelname: Old Ardrossan
Artikelbeschreibung: A spectacular accident involving a lorry with an 85 ton load that crashed through the Parkhouse Road railway bridge (fortunately no one was hurt), a huge cargo ship aground on the Inches, and a raging inferno at Christie's sleeper works are some of the more dramatic events of Ardrossan's past that are featured in this book. More familiar but equally interesting are pictures of Brennen's Dairy, a local A1 bus, Charles Murchie's grocer's van and local football and rugby teams (our own Bob McSherry, co-author of this book, appears in one of the latter photos!). The station, docks, pier, and some famous vessels connected with the town are included too.
Artikelname: Old Auchinleck
Artikelbeschreibung: Auchinleck experienced a boom in the mid-nineteenth century as mining took off on a large scale locally - the town's population increased from 1,662 in 1831 to 6,681 in 1881. Pictures in Old Auchinleck include High House Rows, Bridgend Mill, the town's well-known Bridgend Garage and a dramatic photograph of John Stewart's mobile shop in John Allardyce's garden after Mr Stewart had to swerve to avoid a coal lorry. Also included are the Miners' Rescue Station, St Patrick's football team, a group of Auchinleck Talbot supporters, and views of what became the Boswell Museum prior to and during its restoration. Other pictures feature High House Pit's winding gear and beam engine, shaft-sinking at Barony Colliery, and members of Auchinleck Curling Club on Merlin Loch.
Artikelname: Old Ayr
Artikelbeschreibung: This wide-ranging selection of pictures includes Ayr's old ice rink, Codona's funfair during a visit to the Esplanade, tramcars being dismantled at the Bellesleyhill Road depot and the Ayrshire Agricultural Show at the racecourse. In fact most aspects of the town's history are represented, with a pleasing mixture of vanished landmarks and features that are still recognisable today. The picture of John Colquhoun, rag and bone man, perched on his cart, is particularly evocative of an age long-gone. There's the Ayr United football team of 1921-22, while in an aerial view of the town the former Beresford Park football pitch (on which the Odeon was built) has sheep grazing on it.
Artikelname: Old Beith
Artikelbeschreibung: This is a lovely collection of photos of a town that has seen more than its fair share of demolition. All the principal streets as were are here, also Spier's School, Hessilhead Castle, Giffen House, Morrishill House, Gateside and Barrmill. Donald Reid's text is excellent.
Artikelname: Old Catrine and Sorn
Artikelbeschreibung: Modern-day Catrine is a sleepy place, and it is quite astonishing to see pictures of the giant mill buildings that once filled its centre. Everything has changed since these were swept away - the main road through the town has been realigned, the railway station has closed, and many of its old tenements and houses have been demolished. Rhona Wilson's book includes a comprehensive history of the weaving industry, as well as pictures of Ballochmyle House, an Edwardian merry-go-round set up for Catrine Gala day, and Mrs Stewart who delivered milk and eggs carried by her mule. The history of Sorn, Catrine's smaller neighbour, is told in the final ten pages of the book.
Artikelname: Old Cumnock
Artikelbeschreibung: Cumnock became a market town in the early sixteenth century and went on to flourish both as an agricultural centre and a focus for local industry. Initially industrial activity centred around handloom weaving and the manufacture of snuff boxes, but aided by the arrival of the railways in the 1850s coal began to be mined on a large scale. Famous resident James Keir Hardie put Cumnock on the map when he formed an early union in the town, later becoming a founder member of the Scottish Labour Party. His story features in the book, along with photographs of many of Cumnock's best-known sights. Several of these, such as the Bell Tree, Hillside House and the old open-air swimming pool in Woodroad Park, have now vanished. Information about the neighbouring communities of Cronberry and Lugar is included too, along with illustrations of them.
Artikelname: Old Dalmellington, Patna & Waterside
Artikelbeschreibung: Once an area of industrial wealth, and still an area of great natural beauty, the corner of Ayrshire which contains Dalmellington, Patna and Waterside has a long history stretching back to before the times of the Covenantors. Read about life in the pits, the flying school at Loch Doon, and find out how Patna got its name while enjoying 52 excellent period photographs, most never published before.
Artikelname: Old Dalry
Artikelbeschreibung: Originally a centre for handloom weaving, Dalry subsequently prospered as the mining of coal and ironstone took off on a large scale and an ironworks was opened. After the mines were worked out or ceased to be viable, textile mills formed the main source of employment, although these subsequently closed too, and since the 1950s the Roche factory has been the main local employer. Old Dalry comprehensively covers the streets and sights of the town, and also includes pictures of the few remaining vestiges of its former mining heritage.
Artikelname: Old Darvel
Artikelbeschreibung: This ancient Valley Town has a history stretching back to 1066 and in its industrial heyday was a pioneer of the lace industry, employing thousands from all over Scotland and its exports making it a household name throughout the world. The home of Alexander Fleming and the brass band that was officially Scotland's best, read all about it in this detailed history which features 51 brilliant period photographs.
Artikelname: Old Fairlie
Artikelbeschreibung: For what appears to be a quiet seaside town, Fairlie has a surprising amount of history and industry associated with it. Yacht-building, quarrying, a busy steamer pier and two railway stations were some of the features that led to its prosperity. In the nineteenth century wealthy Glaswegians started building houses in Fairlie, and it also became a popular escape from the city for less affluent holidaymakers, who hired rowing boats, played tennis, went putting, or just enjoyed the beach. Frank Donnachie's comprehensive captions recall many of Fairlie's former residents, characters and business people, and accompany an evocative collection of photographs.
Artikelname: Old Galston
Artikelbeschreibung: The third in our series on the Irvine Valley towns (volumes on Darvel and Newmilns have already been published), Old Galston features over fifty very rare and unpublished photographs from previously untapped local picture collections. They are accompanied by a full history of this ancient community and the text includes extensive reference to the news stories of yesteryear, including the daring robbery of Co-op's safe in 1920 (the robbers later tried to blow open the safe in a field, but blew up the takings instead) and the day in 1903 when a bull went on the rampage down the main street. It also covers the history of the major industries of the past, the mills and the mines. The author, Hugh Maxwell, is a native of the area and contributes historical articles to both the Scots Magazine and Scottish Memories.
Artikelname: Old Girvan
Artikelbeschreibung: Throughout the first half of the twentieth century Girvan was famed as a popular summer resort for the working people of Glasgow and the industrial towns of the central belt. That heyday is recalled in the fifty-two photographs of this book, as well as the town's one-time fishing industry. For example, several pictures feature large catches of cod laid out on the quayside and one shows a boat practically capsizing under the weight of a huge tuna caught in the Firth of Clyde - sights not seen in Girvan for many years. The town's history is also told in the extensive text and this includes many stories from the past - the time when the lifeboat had to be launched to rescue men on Ailsa Craig from famine, the burning of the McMaster Hall, the blizzard of 1908, the victory celebrations after the First World War, and the murder of Alexander Ross. The summer attractions of the past are also featured - the Pierrots, the Canadian Cavaliers, the bathing boxes, and the simple pleasures of building castles on the sands.
Artikelname: Old Irvine
Artikelbeschreibung: Having succumbed to the 1970s craze for dramatic town centre redevelopments, it's refreshing to see pictures of a more old-world Irvine before the bulldozers moved in. By contrast, views of the harbour show a part of Irvine that not only survived the ravages of 70s redevelopment, but has since been sympathetically restored - and complemented by the Scottish Maritime Museum. Eglinton Street, Kirkgate, High Street, Bank Street and Bridgegate feature prominently, along with the racecourse, academy, signal tower and many other locations.
Artikelname: Old Kilbirnie and Glengarnock
Artikelbeschreibung:
From linen to coal and iron, these two villages were at the heart of 19th century industrial expansion in the area. The boom lasted until the mid-twentieth century when the industries that had contributed to the expansion declined and finally closed leaving a vacuum in their wake. Fifty-two period photographs of two communities, taken in the early 1900s when they were at the heart of Ayrshire's industrial might.
Artikelname: Old Kilmarnock

There are too many list here but highlights include Dairy School interiors, Walker & Templeton workers, Glenfield & Kennedy, tramway power station, Riccarton, Treeshill, Massey-Harris factory interiors, Fairyhill Road, Annanhill Estate, Ayrshire bacon factory, Johnnie Walker factory interiors, Barclay, Southhook Potteries, Fullarton Street, Springhill Pit No.3 , Bonnyton Mine Rescue Team, Clark Street plus dozens of other street and town views, Kilmarnock FC of course and much much more.
Artikelname: Old Kilmaurs and Fenwick
Artikelbeschreibung: Fifty-two period photographs of these two Ayrshire villages, accompanied by an informative history by local author Alex Young. There hasn't been one like this before and no other book will give you the low-down on the boot factories, the railways, the home of John Boyd-Orr of Glasgow University fame or Matthew Faulds the 100-year-old weaver of Fenwick.
Artikelname: Old Kilwinning
Artikelbeschreibung: Kilwinning's shops, traders and pubs are well represented in this book, with pictures of the interior of the Market Bar, the Pierottis' fish and chip shop, Crawford's bakehouse, the Winton Arms Hotel and a well-stocked horse-drawn cart belonging to Kilwinning Co-op. The Eglinton ironworks, Dirran's sawmill and Sevenacres grain mill represent local employers, while the ironworks' flute band and 1922-23 line-up of Kilwinning Athletic FC show that it wasn't all work in Old Kilwinning.
Artikelname: Old Largs
Artikelbeschreibung: Nardini's and the old Moorings building are two of Largs instantly-recognisable landmarks, but Bob and Maureen McSherry have included loads of more unusual views of the town in their book too. There's the naval destroyer that ran aground in March 1914 and a rather sad picture of a dancing bear, not attracting many onlookers on a rainy day. Pictures of the 1910 floods show the makeshift log bridge that temporarily replaced its more sturdy counterpart over the Gogo Water, and a very waterlogged Main Street. Many other locations are featured too.
Artikelname: Old Mauchline and Tarbolton
Artikelbeschreibung: Fifty-two period photographs of these towns in the heart of Burns Country, including one of Mauchline railway station which it is hoped will be reopened soon. The book contains a full history of these communities and also features Crosshands, Failford and Stair.
Artikelname: Old Maybole & North Carrick
Artikelbeschreibung: This book has a wistful feel to it as it chronicles a period when the town's shoe factories employed 1500 and sold a million pairs of shoes and boots a year. Also included are the villages of Culroy, Dunure (one of my own favourite places), Croy Shore, Maidens, Straiton, Crosshill, Kirkmichael and Turnberry.
Artikelname: Old Muirkirk and Glenbuck
Artikelbeschreibung: Muirkirk became a major industrial centre between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. A tarworks was followed by an ironworks, and to feed these extensive mining of coal and ironstone took place. As local mineral reserves were worked out, the population dropped from its 1901 peak of 5,000 to the present level of about 2,000. Consequently this small, isolated town has seen enormous change over the last century, with hundreds of houses demolished and a huge exodus of people forced to seek work elsewhere. David Pettigrew illustrates the Muirkirk story with rare photographs of the pits, rows and shops that once thrived here. Nearby Glenbuck, even more isolated, suffered a similar industrial decline and is now a ghost village. A photograph of the Glenbuck Cherrypickers and the story of the famous Shankly brothers is included.
Artikelname: Old Newmilns
Artikelbeschreibung: A lovely collection of 51 photographs of a town that was once one of the lace capitals of the world, accompanied by a detailed history by local historian and resident of the town, Hugh Maxwell.

A fascinating mix!
Artikelname: Old Saltcoats
Artikelbeschreibung: Crowds arriving for a holiday during the Glasgow Fair, motorboat trips, and midnight swimming at the outdoor pool are some of the subjects featured in Old Saltcoats. The old Casino Picture House (replaced by the Regal, now a nightclub), thatched cottages on Windmill Street, and the crowning of the first Queen of the Sea are also included, along with the town's mineral well (once a tourist attraction), a line-up of Saltcoats Victoria football team, and the 1901 fire brigade with their hand-pulled cart
Artikelname: Old South Ayrshire Villages
Artikelbeschreibung:
Girvan was not the only attraction in South Ayrshire for holidaymakers during the early 1900s, as the many villages of this still remote region also received a large share of visitors. Indeed, one photograph in this collection of fifty-two shows an early motor car that had come all the way from Dundee - a very far distance in those days! The villages included are Ballantrae, Barr, Barrhill, Colmonell, Crosshill, Dalrymple, Dunure, Kirkmichael, Kirkoswald, Lendalfoot, Maidens, Minishant, Pinmore, Pinwherry, Straiton and Turnberry and the views are accompanied by an extensive history which not only gives the background story of each community, but also gives a flavour of life a century ago when people still relied on the potato crops, fishing and weaving for a living, when the daily highlight was the arrival of the stagecoaches and, later, charabancs of the Coaching Tour from Girvan, and when Daljarrock still had a post office.
NOW OUT OF PRINT AND COLLECTABLE
Artikelname: Old Stevenston

There's a centenary line-up of the 1st Stevenston Boys Brigade from 1983, a 1956 class from the Higher Grade School, and the Recreation Club rugby team of 1946.
