Scottish Loch and Canal Steamers

Ever since William Syrnington built the first steam boat on Dalswinton Loch in Dumfries, and sailed the Charlotte Dundas along the Forth & Clyde Canal
in 1803, Scotland has been at the forefront of steam-boat technology. With its myriad lochs and rivers, communication in parts of Scotland has only been facilitated by water travel, and steam and motor ships and boats have been a regular sight on many lochs and on the canals. Scottish Loch & Canal Steamers looks at the many pleasure steamers and motor vessels used on Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Loch Katrine, Loch Earn, the Lake of Menteith and many other sea and freshwater Lochs, as well as on the Forth & Clyde, Union, Monkland and Caledonian Canals. Alistair Deayton brings together for the first time many unpublished images with an informative text and tells the story of the development of passenger services on Scotland's lochs and inland waterways.
