Welsh Slate Crafts

Slate was the most Welsh of industries. Welshmen won the rock and crafted the product using methods developed in Wales and machines devised and made in Wales. Welshmen carried the slate using rail technologies created in Wales. Welshman built and manned the ships that carried the slate to every part of the world. From harsh mountain industrial fastnesses there emerged not just a product but a whole proud and cultured way of life where a poet is honoured above a prince and a starving man might 'sooner buy books than bread.
