The Industrial Past of Dorset

One of the delights of a rural county like Dorset is its mix of traditional small-scale industries, many based on natural resources. Stone quarrying is the best known, but other minerals to be worked include clay and iron ore. Limeburning, brick and cement-making, potteries and foundries have left their mark on the landscape, as have brewing, corn milling, textiles and rope, twine and nets. Methods of transport and service industries have also contributed to the county's industrial heritage.
