The Botanists and Guides of Snowdonia

This is an account of the botanical exploration of Snowdonia from the early period when the Herbalists and Apothecaries conducted 'simpling voyages' into the countryside to gather plants for medicinal uses, up until the Victorian era by which time botany had developed into a separate science. In order to constitute such a study it is necessary to link the subjects of history and botany, and this reveals an impressive group of local botanists and travellers who have contributed very materially to the advancement of our knowledge of the flora of the mountains of Eryri. The local guides played a major part in the progress of the study for it was they who led the botanists to the habitats of the rare plants. This book gives an interesting account of the characters involved, and also of the plants which they found during an era when the 'plant hunters' walked the mountains of Snowdonia.
