Castles and Forts of Dorset
Dorset's surviving castles and forts are the visible record of a past that stretches back for more than a thousand years. Medieval warfare, the struggle for supremacy between king and parliament, the fear of invasion, each has contributed to a historical legacy that embraces every corner of the county and includes many of its most attractive landmarks. Some, like Corfe Castle, are familiar. Others endure only as fragments of earthworks. Dorset's castles and forts belong to three main periods: those dating to the Middle Ages, the coastal castles built during Tudor times, and the Victorian and twentieth century forts built to defend our island shores from the threat of invasion.
