These were farming's golden years, when the great autumn sheep fairs still brought their own special character to the local market towns.A Shepherd's Delight is both a celebration of a vanishing way of life, and a modest and often amusing self-portrait of someone whose appetite for life remains undimmed.Today, Larry Skeats is well-known as the landlord of the Trooper Inn, one of the Blackmore Vale's most popular pubs.

Artikelname: Build Your Own Earth Oven
Artikelbeschreibung: If you can make mud pies, you can make your own wood-fired oven out of earth. And in that oven (with no more technique than you need to make mud pies), you can make perfect loaves of old-world, artisan, sourdough bread! You don?t need a book to build a mud oven, but if you?re doing something for the first time, it?s nice to have company. So I tried to write a book that would provide decent company for anyone, beginner to journeyman (I don't claim to be an expert, but building with earth is not the domain of experts, which is why it?s so wonderful). And since a good oven alone doesn?t make good bread, I?ve included a simple introduction to sourdough that covers what I think are the essentials for understanding what makes the difference between good bread and a perfect loaf.
A perfect companion book to "The Ballymaloe Bread Book".

The craft of domestic spoonmaking developed into that of the lovespoon, and the author details the different styles that emerged, explains some of the symbolism of the designs, describes the woodworking craft from start to finish, and traces the growth, decline and rebirth of this uniquely Welsh craft tradition. Artikelname: Making Walking Sticks for a Hobby
Artikelbeschreibung: The author has spent his working life in engineering. Firstly as an apprentice and finally as a Director with special responsibility for jig and tool design and manufacturing methods. Despite the fact that every working day involved dealing with steel and their alloys, etc., there was always an interest in working with wood and the enjoyment in working with woodcutting tools. It was not surprising that, on retirement it seemed a natural progression to find a hobby using wood as a medium, and his thoughts turned to woodcarving. However, whilst searching the library bookshelves for books on this subject, several books on walking sticks and relating methods of manufacture captured his attention. After much interesting reading it was obvious that the subject was far more involved and interesting, and time-consuming than the layman would have first envisaged. It was a subject which would involve design and many facets of the practical side of manufacture and production ideas. The bait was taken and the decision to have-a-go materialised.Walking in the countryside with his wife Audrey was always pleasurable, so collecting a few shanks whilst out walking resulted in the ideal combination of exercise and a hobby in the making.Almost twelve months elapsed before several shanks, collected whilst out walking, were dry enough to be straightened. Two particular ones were selected out of about a dozen, to be the experimental ones. The first one chosen was a very nicely marked hazel shank for Audrey; the second one being a heavier ash stick for his own use.The straightening process took some time but eventually the shanks were ready for dressing. A well-seasoned piece of sycamore provided sufficient material for two heads which were dowelled and glued, and once tips had been fitted, both sticks were treated with two coats of yacht varnish. These are the 'badged' sticks on the front cover.

Artikelname: Traditional Spoon Carving in Wales
Artikelbeschreibung: By now, the lovespoon has become one of the representative images of Wales, a unique emblem of the culture. There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Every year, thousands of visitors take home with them examples of the lovespoon, and every year the lovespoon enjoys a prominent position in Welsh weddings. To tell the story of the lovespoon, this book starts with its humble older sister, the domestic spoon. Long before knives and forks were used for eating, and long before the availability of metal spoons, carved wooden spoons were in wide use, and their manufacture was a major occupation in the Welsh countryside. The craft of domestic spoonmaking developed into that of the lovespoon, and the author details the different styles that emerged, explains some of the symbolism of the designs, describes the woodworking craft from start to finish, and traces the growth, decline and rebirth of this uniquely Welsh craft tradition.
